Hi. Have taken a lot off runaway lelandi and never had a death - even seemed to save them in a heatwave year. Going back to a line of trees that i pretty much cut in half a few years ago. That was at about 10' or so, now the guy wants them down to 6' -which will produce a wannabee totem pole.... Can they come back from this or, does he get to see a lot more of the folks next door?

I can take them down to about an inch, maybe 2 inches above the ground. Any lower than that and I need to break out the stump grinder.

Seriously though, I've seen people prune the crap out of them, way more than I'd ever take off... and quite often they bounce back. I wouldnt take them any lower than where they are now unless trunk diameter is less than 6". If they were originally 20' as implied by your original post, then that really isnt very big for a leylandii. Are they multi stem or single leader? Pics are always helpful. Did they bounce back well from the original trimming?

Hello Shaun
Have been working at the place for about 16 years and i think that i did top those cypress off years before the half-way cut. Wife says that they were bigger than i recall .Will take a picture when i'm back there next week. Thanks. Malcolm

Hi, sorry for the thread resurrection. I have been offered some leylandii from a friend who took down a trailer load recently.
Does it bun clean ? Worried about creosote as I burned a few tons of pine earlier in the year and when inspectin my chimmney found the hard enamel like resin stuck to the sides.
