Hi I wanted to experiment since reading this site with 8 tooth sprocket I was wondering when going from 7 tooth to 8 tooth how many drive links does it normally take I would guess 1 or 2 . Also are there saws that you would not do this on. I have a couple 353 huskys a 359 husky a 5100 dolmar I don't think the dolmar needs it

If those saws use the .325, I would surely try it on the 359 and 5100, but not on the 353 - if any of them use 3/8", leave it alone.

The bar lenght you use is an important consideration, also - with long bars (more than 16"), forget it.

Depends on how much adjustment room you had to begin with. In my experience, most saws don't care whether you run 7 or 8, and you're left with enough clearance to get the bar and chain on and enough room to adjust the chain tension properly. It's only with 9+ that it becomes a real problem.

None, usually, but .325x9 calls for one extra on the MS361, over the 260 with x8, both with 16" bars (as the spline sizes are different, there is no way you can use a x9 on the 260, or an x7 or x8 on the 361).

With 3/8", there is no difference between 7- and 8-pin, on the 361 (8-pin n/a for the 260 spline size).

Oh really Troll, I guess you missed this one,--part # 1121 077 1040 Runs the 3/8 chain without a hitch. Local dealer has them in stock.

I bet you owned and ran a few 026/260's in your day too, eh SC

I don't know about your other saws, but I have a 3/8 x 8 pin sprocket on my 359 with a 16" bar, it is a little tight getting the chain on, but there is room

What's the point of running 3/8x8 on those saws??????? - unless they are heavily modded of course.........:blob2: :blob2:

If I was running your saws with 3/8's, I would run a 7T, if it was .325 I would make sure in clean wood I was running stihl RS chain in 325 and try a 8T and if it didnt pull it go back to the 7T in it.

The 5100 cuts like a bat out of H running 7T 3/8 square chisel
Dont see why a 359 stock cant run it either.
A stock Poulan 3750 ran 3/8 full chisel with 7T.
The stock ms361 loves the 3/8's 7T with RSC.
Some of my Partner 5000's with 49cc run 3/8's 7T

3/8 is what come on it & I left it that way 'cause it works good. my 359 has had work done on it & it's mostly used for 8" to 16" wood. I experimented with a 7 & 8 pin and the 8 cuts faster in most cases = sharp chain & no hogging

I use 72 LG & 72 CL on my 359
