saw some company go in and grind up enough trees to make a 30 foot pile of mulch. obviously, mulch brings in more cash than firewood.

usually mulch (dyed) runs between 30 to 50 bucks a yard...around here at least. so, it got me wondering....

how many?

A face cord can mean anything , it is not really an accurate way to measure volume being such an ambiguous term so it would be impossible go pin down accurately

I don't know how many cords but it does seem like a waste. My city used to have a free dump site for trees/brush etc. I used to take brush there and bring back firewood. They turned the yard waste into mulch which you could also take for free if you were a resident.

Well, it must be expensive to maintain a tub grinder because the city quit doing it. Now they contracted with a local soil/gravel/mulch outfit that will take your yard waste. Of course they no longer give anything away for free. They have had a pile of logs there for a year. Probably 100 cords or more. Last time i took brush there I asked if they would sell loads of logs. The answer was no. Some of the guys that work there take some home and the rest goes into the tub grinder. I guess mulch is worth more than firewood.

Seems like a waste to me.

your talking city gov..that right there,,is the answer to the question...................

4'x8'x16" is a common face cord ! so your answer should be 1.5666 cubic yards..... then like said it all depends on what you are calling a "face cord". then there is also the factor of a solid product to a ground/chiped product which will have a larger volume . i use a 6:1 ratio of chips, sawdust, mulch to a solid volume. again the the correct way would be by the pound/100 weight/ton.

unless the rules have changes, a face cord has always been 4 x 4 x 16. did some one change that recently?

anyways, it be easier to just go by weigh....rightt?

I dont do face cords, but in my area, a face cord has never been 4'x4'x16", instead it is 4'x8'x16" or 1/3 of a cord. It can be 4'x4'x24" which is a half cord.
As for going by weight, I wont be running by any scales between my house and the wood pile, so where am I supposed to weigh every load.

! OK, so if you are selling any of your face cords ? I will take all you have !! ? when can you deliver?........ I would love to buy 2 cords at a face cord value! LOL..........

I'm pretty sure he meant 4'x4'x16" - but I've never seen anyone take a face off the end of the pile. Chit, you could sell 4'x4'x4" and call it a face cord off the end.

I'm curious about how much volume chipped turns into. Been thinking that might be a good way to "pave" some of my muddier trails. Chipper rentals aren't exactly cheap though - for what HD charges for 4 hours, I could have class 5 hauled in.

When the Amish mills clear cut out areas around me they make neat orderly stacks of the good square rails to sell to the mill the leftover stuff is then sold as slab bundles for 10 bucks a truck load . They always tell people they get the exact same price ( 10$) to chip grind it up if no one buys it for firewood .

A yard of mulch is around 550 pounds. So about 4 yards would be similar to a cord of wood.

???? some new math you're using??
