Hi there I recently received a used stihl 026 that has the fixed jet intelli carb on it, the saw seems to run good its going at about 12,000 rpm 12,500 tops according to the tach. Was wondering if putting on an adjustable carb and turning it up to around 13,500 to 14,000 rpm I beleive that is tops for this motor without burning it up, would make much difference in the way the saw performs or not. If just minable gain dont think it would be worth doing. Also were is the adjustable oiler screw located, not sure if saw has it or not. Thanks Jeff.

Don't let max rpm fool you. Max rpm is the max the motor will turn, its not the best way to judge how the motor makes power. You may turn your saw up to the max only to find out it doesn't have the power it had at the lower rpm levels. The older 026's were at maxed at 12,500-13,000. The newer 260 run around 14,000. If your 026 isn't a 026Pro, there is two, it doesn't have a adjustable oiler. The 026Pro does but the old plain jane 026 doesn't even though they are both considered pro saws. My 026 turns around 12,000 and thats where it seems to cut best. I've tinkered with the rpms levels on it and right around 12,000 seems to be its sweet spot.

Yes, if your happy with how it is leave it alone. The fixed jet Carb may run you a little rich but that's good for the saw.

The ONLY way to know if the max rpm is set to the "best" is timed cuts. On the older 026 with the WT194 or WT22C, the difference in WOT between 13,500 and 12,000 is about 1/64 of a turn... Difference in the cut - not much... and day to day the WOT will vary.

On the newer saws with the WT403 etc (fixed jet), yes they top out at 12,500, but cut really well... with this carb if you open up the muffler slightly, you'll get an increase in WOT rpm and cut speed, but if you're going this route it's best to do it with an adjustable carb.

Oiler - look up in the adjuster hole on the botom of the saw. if there is a screw, it's adjustable.. If not.. no.

muffler

If it seems too rich IN THE CUT, the first thing to do is open up the muffler with two 1/4 inch holes on the front cover. I have done about six saws this way, and they sound spot on afterwards.
