OK,

I'm going to order a 54 in bar for my mill and was wondering how much bar sag, if any, should I expect.

I know some of you have 60 and 70" bars and do have bar sagging issues. But will I get much with a 54" bar?

I get 0.09" with the 60" GB and the same for the 60" Stihl bars.

Details of my first anti-sag device are in this thread.
My pimped anti-sag device is detailed here.

Bob,

Checked out your magnet system. Won't be hard to make one for my mill. I do have to redo my bolt studs for mounting the new bar. Since my mill head is not brand specific I plan on purchasing a bar that would fit a 088 or 090 Stihl. The bar I have is for an older generation saw and they are becoming difficult to find. Time to upgrade I guess, just like a computer.

Thanks

I was thinking of building a box to store the bar in when not in use since I don't plan to use it all the time. The bar I'm looking at is a .404-.063".

Here's a link to my bar box.
It hold's 4 x 64" worth of bars.
This is a mistake, when the box is full it near pulls the arm out of my shoulder socket when I carry it!

I posted it the chainsaw forum because I know those guys are so kind about anal projects :smile2:

Bob,

Nice box, and I'm sure it's heavy when it's full. Call it anal or what ever, but you don't have to worry about edges of bars getting nicked in the back of your van. I'll definitely make a box to store the new bar in. Here is a box I just built for tent poles for the new packers tent my brother and I just got for an up-coming Mule Deer hunt in Nevada. It was made entirely from recycled crate wood. Only thing I had to buy was some hinges and latches I didn't have. While we are in camp it will double as a bench to sit on. Since I built it, my brother has added rope handles at each end for carrying.

Nice tent box Jerry.

I can't remember when I saw it but one of the neatest and simplest bar boxes I have seen was made from two 3/4" thick boards sandwiching a strip of 1/4" ply packing around the two long and one short edges all glued together. The bar was just slid into one end and a slot was cut into one of the boards so a finger could be hooked into the bar mounting slot to drag the bar out of the box.
The box could also be hung or stood up with the bar edge protected at all times.

Bob,

I actually have an aluminum sleeve I made for the 30" bar for my Wards 820 saw. I was checking on bars today and the WoodsmanPro bar I'm looking at only has a 50 or 60 inch bars. I was hoping for a 54". I'm going to be converting my mill head to use the Stihl studs so I can use newer style bars. My rails/mill head will handle a 60" bar, I just don't feel I will need such a large bar. A 50" will work just fine for the logs I plan to mill. My mill currently has a 40" bar and another 10" will be perfect.

Your case description reminds me of the bar case-sleeve my Dad made for my saw years ago from some 1/4" plywood with a lot of nuts and screws to hold it together. My brother and I used to go down to the local auto parts store in town and get the free stickers that we put on the sleeve. I think it's still up at my Dad's house, STP sticker and all.
