I mostly joined the forum because I was enjoying building 2-cycle engines and I have little wood to cut. I am now planning on camping in the Austin area and am going to order seasoned hardwood for the camp days. Camp days are Friday afternoon through Sunday morning. There are between 6 - 12 campers. We will likely burn heavy for around 15 hours and around 30 hours low burn just to keep the fire going. The hardwood is likely pecan, oak, or mesquite depending on pricing. Any suggestions on amount of wood?

That's a tough one. I have burnt in two days of camping anywhere from one row in my truck bed to a whole short bed load of wood in a single weekend. Granted when I burn a whole bed load it is cold and snowing out, which in TX you won't have that problem.

A guess on safe amount would be 1/3 of a cord (or a face cord), per camping trip.

I agree on 1/3 cord. You will probably burn a minimum of 2-3 pieces every 1-2 hours. That would put you in the range of 100-120 pieces of firewood. I wouldn't get too excited about species. In an open fire everything burns about the same.

I get the question from campers all the time, "How much will I need for two day". The answer is always the same, "Depends on how thirsty you are".

Anyway, for campers wanting small amounts I made this rack up and sell for $25. It holds about 50 pieces and it will weight about 250#s. It won't fit in a small sedan trunk.

Thats a very tough question with a lot of varibles.
1. How much beer are you bringing?
2. How much beer are you bringing?
3. How much beer do your friends drink?
4. Do you have that person in the group who's part cave man and just discovered fire and keeps throwing splits on?

I would 2nd the 1/3 - 1/2 cord.

"Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

For a afternoon to evening small fire I would consider a full wheelbarrow enough.

You know how people are with the fire. Unless you have pretty much a couple of people in charge of the fire. You always have the one heaving wood upon wood on it.[emoji91] [emoji91]

I deliver to two groups that come up to go stay at a lodging facility for a weekend. Both groups are from Los Angeles area,
one group orders two pickup loads stacked with side boards ubove the cab and the other orders three. They have called to complain that they ran out of wood at midnight. Each uses or burns more than cord. So they leave nothing behind. Apparently they enjoy themselves. Most other people get along with a few wheelbarrels worth. Thanks

They called to complain? Man at that rate of burning they might as well of just lit the truck on fire with the load still in it when it arrived.
