I saw parts and pieces of this one today, didn't have a camera with me except on the cell and it would have been pretty rude for me to hop out and start taking pics. However, I was torn between wanting a lawn chair and a 6 pack to enjoy the show, and wanting to get as far away as possible so I didn't see someone get killed. As it was, I took the long way around and drove past it a couple of times.

The tree was a decent sized sugar maple, maybe 28" dbh and 60' tall. 3 main leaders, one towards the lawn and driveway, one center leader fairly vertical, and one back leader over the garage and towards the neighbor's fence. Center leader was pretty dead and had some hangers in it, trunk was maybe 5' from the garage.

1st trip by, I see a ladder in the tree, truck and wood splitter in the driveway, 2 guys on the ground and 1 in the tree, standing above the ladder in a crotch, holding what looked like a 20" saw. No rope, no saddle, no spikes, nothing. Needless to say, not a piece of PPE to be seen.

2nd trip by, front leader is on the ground being cut up, truck is attached to a rope, which is attached to a chain, which is attached to what looked like a heavy ratchet strap in the center leader. Everything is tentioned and the guys are sort of standing around looking puzzled.

Next trip by, there is a guy on the garage roof holding a rope. Truck/chain/rope assembly is gone, and the center leader and back leader have what looks like several ratchet straps wrapped around them multiple times.

Final trip by, tree is down. Center leader is out in the yard where it's supposed to be. Back leader and top is wedged between the garage and the fence and there is a decent sized section of the garage roof gone. Garage walls were still standing but it looked like it hit the garage roof and rolled/slid off, down between the outside wall and the fence. All 3 guys were still standing and no ambulances to be seen, so I guess everyone survived!

Whole thing took about 6 hrs without clean-up.

Hmmmmmm.......................

you should have dropped a business card and said "next time when you want it done right, call me"

yeah, thats when they throw their stuff in the truck and say we're going for help. Never to be seen again!! I would have jumped out with my camera and snapped a couple of shots, just to show prospective customers what their choices are.

So as I am reading this, I am thinking what the crap are they doing.. but then you say tree is down.. I think oh well, guess they managed .. whatever..

Then I read this last part, and almost can't type for the laughing with tears in eyes (sorry - couldn't help it)

Glad everyone survived.. hopefully they learned a lesson as well. Leave the big stuff for the guys who know how to run the big saws.. :chainsaw:

Homeowner and a couple of friends/victims/accomplices?

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. No pix. I thought it would be rude to hope out with the cell phone and start snapping photos and saying "Smile, you're on the net now!" Besides, I had a weird feeling that I didn't want to be associated with it any way, including walking up and saying "Hey, did you know you're doing this all wrong and if you're lucky, you'll just smash up a building?", but I had to go back and check a couple of times. Sort of like rubbernecking at a car wreck, except that this was a car wreck that hadn't really happened yet.

I would have liked to see the back leader hit the garage roof though!

:popcorn::buttkick:

When I see guys like that, I have stopped and picked their brains and say "Well let me get your card cuz I got some work and then ask how much a tree like that costs to remove. The guy gives up the price, I take the card, and laugh all the way to the car!!

I've done that to get perspective on the knowledge of the crew on how to price a removal. Needless to say I've been shocked at what a crew of 4 or 5 will charge for a removal that might take 6 or more hours. The guys must only be making 30 dollars a day before taxes.

Around here there is a low demand for professionalism and high demand for cheap. It is frustrating.

I feel little pity for homeowners who think Joe shmo in his PU with a Poulan Wild thang is a pro tree worker.

it happens around here way too often

but this is the capital of cheap.i try to get pictures if i have my camera.i always drive by several times.

support your local certified arborist.

you get what you pay for.
next time hopefully they support their local certified arborist/tree care professionals.
of course most of us know this group of (i'l be kind) workers, didn't have insurance and the homeowner will be flipping the bill for that garage.
i wouldn't call the homeowner lucky if this group offers to repair the damage themselves either lol.

I could be wrong, but from reading the post, it sounds like maybe it was him and a few friends doing the work.

.

Surely these are NOT professionals.. sounds like some buddies over for some firewood and a beer.

I seriously doubt they had any insurance (friends not likely to!), and the home owners policy likely will not cover this!! Expensive firewood if you ask me.
