FTA,
Sometimes it might behoove you to just be quiet.
I own ALOT of guns. Enough to most likely make our wishy-washy idiots in Washington piss themselves. And I hit what I am aiming at.
That being said, carrying a weapon, whether it be a gun, knife, or battle axe, onto the jobsite is a big mistake. All major construction companies and major projects absolutely prohibit weapons on site for good reasons. Sticking a knife in someoe's face while doing a job on private property definately won't add to your professional reputation. I guess I should also clarify here that I view guns and knives as tools, not weapons, but in the wrong hands, they can definately do damage.
I have run projects in some of the worst cities in the country, including New York City, Boston MA, Providence RI, Bridgeport CT, Washington DC, Pittsburgh and Philly PA, Houston, Dallas, and Corpus Christie TX, Miami and Tampa/St. Pete FL. I have never had to carry either a pistol or a knife. I think your justification is b u l l s h i t.
As for the OP concerning the finger incident, smiling and waving is the most diplomatic, but I have found another way to handle it that works wonders.
Find the company/crew that took time out of thier day to offend you. Find out where they drink. Hit that bar up while they are in there. Locate the A holes, and buy them a round of drinks. If they don't realize who you are, explain it to them. Let them know you are 100-percent aware of thier actions, and you dont appreciate it. The great majority of the time, they will see things your way. If they dont, write them off. Thats how I handle those things, anyway...
Another ranting and raving post of my two cents.
