We recently moved into a home with a backyard that has a lot of very random and haphazard gardening, beds, plants, etc. A few victims of the former "landscaper" include 3 cherry trees. These trees were planted under a larger shade tree and did not have a lot of access to sunlight, causing them to try to break through the canopy. They are at about a 30 degree angle (which doesn't bother us, they don't have to be straight) - but what we don't know what to do about is that they have grown "spindly." In other words, they are about 10 feet of 4" diameter trunk with no lateral growth whatsoever, and the few branches they have are at the very top. We're pruned back the shade tree to give them more light, but have no idea how to prune/trim/help the poor 3 cherries. Do we tie them to straighten? Prune the top branches? Any advice or suggestions are very much appreciated!
