I would much rather have snakes than mice.. The mice at my garage are non-stop.. Some days my traps are quiet, some days there are 3 or 4 in them. Some days 3 traps are sprung and empty. Very few snakes around. I would love to see them instead of the mice that just tear #$it up. I wish I knew more about them.

Shortly after we moved to our place in the woods in NW Illinois, I found a large snake resting in our shed under my tool box. I think it was getting ready to shed. After it left in about two weeks, I found a 6' 10" shed skin behind my workbench! I don't mind sharing space with a rodent-getter as long as I know where it is when I'm in the shed. O

I would say adopt a stray cat. But they tend to get lazy after a while if you feed them.
"Allhe", our resident felid, is on the job 24/7, but she's responsible for outdoor rodent control.

When the rolling shed doors are closed, she has no access. The mice, however, can still come and go as they please, but so can snakes! My hope is that this reptilian rodent retardant will remain resident long enough to reduce the risk of repeated rodent reproduction and repopulation. Really, I do! O

No cats.. 9 out of 10 of them are useless as tits on a bull.. They are more problems than the mice. When there are cats around, there are still mice around.. Won't have both.. Few are reliable mousers.. I have learned to clamp on vise grips to mouse traps so they don't take off with the trap. If you want to be creative, turn the trap up on it's side so they have to reach up..... Much rather trap and have some fun than put up with cats non-sense.. Those big glue rat traps are pretty effective also.

A Barn Tom Cat. You can name him, he might care, he'll get hungry, and find game. Along the way, he goes outside to do his business, sits/sleeps next to the wood burner, or on your bench, in the window sunshine............and welcomes you every time. Tom and Jerry is over-rated.

I like this gizmo. It's damn expensive but it makes it easy to deal with mice and rats.

No mess. Just carry the whole trap outside and sling the mouse out of it, take it back and reset it for the next customer.

Mind your cat though. He might get a nasty shock if he plays with it.

My cats don’t let rodents get too comfortable. The gray one in the pictures has been killing everything she can in our garage and yard for over 10 years.

She used to get one about every day. Now that’s slowed down, but I really think it’s because the rodents decided they’d rather live elsewhere.

Squirrels are the exception. They live mostly beyond her reach, but she keeps them out of the garage.

I use these and they work great. For instance, I never had a mouse problem in my off-site storage unit. One day I saw evidence of mice which must have come in from a new tenants belongings. I placed one of these with peanut butter as bait... Next day I had five dead mice and they have not returned. I think I caught the problem, literally, before it became to large to stop!

As a farmer, I had trouble with rats going into my tractors and gnawing the wiring harnesses. I decided to use a cattle electric fencer. Clipped the positive to the tractor and the negative to a steel post in the grain store where I keep the machinery. We have an underfloor drying system.
I turned the machine on and there was a load of squealing and rats vacated the store in great numbers. There is a lot of metal work in the main duct and mesh in the floors also the concrete has steel re-enforcement rods. This was apparent when a rat jumped out of the tractor and every time it touched the concrete the squealed and jumped in the air. So it exited the building in a series of jumps and squeals
I have used this system to stop squirrels using my bird feeder with great success as can be seen here. Birds are not affected.

So I suggest putting your equipment in an area protected by metal mesh wired up to a cattle electric fencer
