I dont mean becoming a owner/operator, I am wondering what steps are necessary to get a job with a company? What is it they are looking for in a newbie? I know I would start out doing the grunt work cleaning up limbs, etc... but eventually I would want to be working the saws.

Action speaks louder than words. Do what you're told with an eager and positive attitude. When done, ask what else you can do. A good boss will spot you out and move you up and reward you accordingly. Observe and learn. Be early for work. Just be aware you may get flak from co-workers (jealousy) making them look bad/lazy.

I'm a newbie too, sort of. I have a lot of chainsaw hours but hadn't worked for a tree service up until last year. Be ready to haul a lot of brush and fill up all saws with fluids, change chains, run back and forth all day long. After awhile maybe hint that you wanna try felling a tree or bucking one up. I'm the only employee for the company I work for and I hate the guy but I still run around doing everything I'm asked. No one can complain about someone like that. If you get a good employer they can teach you a lot of valuable things. Good luck with everything and don't give up.
