Simple, yet effective.

If you wanted to make that look 'cleaner' you could weld triangular plates on the side of that tab you bent out of the muffler. You or someone else that can TIG weld really well would have to do it... it's pretty thin stuff.

I would just run it like that and see how it goes. :) Don't forget to retune the carb... I don't want to see your 372 turn into toast. I bet she'll run really well after you get her all tuned up.

Thanks, yea i would have made it prettier, however I dont have a welder nor do I have a welding machine.:msp_biggrin:

:) It still looks well done, by comparison, I probably would've made quite a mess out of trying to cut a little tab like that out, lol. It would be all slanted.

I can see right through it so it's definatly "modded". Is it done or are you going to finish it off? I don't think I'd leave it like that.

I am going to leave it like that, why wouldn't I? It's just a relief hole for exhaust pressure. It's not pretty or professional, just a simple effective muff mod.

just cut the remainder of the hole out and screw on a 288 deflector. $6 part will make that look much better.

Right now it looks like it wants to eat some flesh at some point in time... perhaps when sharpening or pulling off the bar?

looks good, but when your cutting off a stump the grass will catch fire , trust me , from experience, I redid mine to center with a slight bend to the left so you don't catch fire when you have the dogs buried in either, trust me on that one too ,from experience again !

You're going to be blowing hot exhaust gasses all over your brake handle, and might melt it. Get a deflector for it.

+1 I melted a top cover and a chain brake handle on a 445. The handle was still usable, but the top cover was screwed. I felt stupid, but I learnt from my mistake. 288 deflector PN 503589901. If you want the screen its 503405601

I know if that was my saw there would be blood all over that muffler by the time I got done.
Something like that would be a magnet for my hands and arm.

yes on the 288 deflector for the safety reasons. but you also need to put a screen in there to keep unwanted trash out.
i did a similar mod on the front cover of a 261 muffler, but it has a screen underneath.

What would you do to "finish it off" and why?

Like others have said: Screen to catch sparks that start fires, looks like a cut hand waiting to happen, no direction for exhaust heat and noise. I would cut it right off and make a piece to bolt on over it or order the Husky piece that I've seen on others that you bolt on and trim a screen to fit in behind it and make it look like a real professional job. I'm a TIG welder so I have all that equipment but a bolt on would look great too.

I just modded one of my saws as well. What kind of carb adjustment should I make? richer? leaner?

Deflector would be the way to go. Some falling cuts require odd saw positioning and that look like it would be blowing in a uncomfortable spot. I also like a sparkscreen to help keep debris OUT of the muffler.

Tune it RICHER or you'll torch it.

I wouldn't leave it like that as others have said. At a min. whack the tab and get a 288 deflector.

Good luck tuning, you'll have to do it in the cut. My 372 is not MMd, but wears a jungle muffler. I had to trim the limiter tabs and still can't find the "sweet" spot before the rev limiter comes in. You'll have to do it in the cut.

Brad has videos in here about tuning in the cut. Unless you switch to an unlimited coil, you'll have to do it that way, tach won't tell you anything.
