I know you Montaniaks have a few huckleberry areas. I went out this morning to see if I could get to my Ultra Super Secret Mondo Patch, and found I could. I only hit the back of the pickup at the same place as each other trip there. The road was washed a bit, but drivable...I uttered a few bad words.

I checked to make sure I wasn't being followed, and then The Used Dog and I hiked into the patch. If I told you where, I'd have to kill you.

This year has been late. I found a good crop of blooms where berries would normally be. The bees were out working, and that was a good thing. But it looks like it will be October instead of early September for harvest.

Last year, that patch had a crop of 2 berries per bush...it was bad. The year before? I filled my bucket to the brim in about an hour. Huge, gorgeous berries.

It's gotta be better this year than last.

The evergreen huckleberries near the Sound are doing fine, as good as last year or better. Can't say the same for other species. The red ones are especially sparse, but, then, I'm working in a pretty dry place so they don't typically do as well as they would elsewhere anyway.

Cutting pard found a decent patch in the bottom of his strip Friday, but Cody and family went out today and found mostly green stuff.

I think we're pretty late here due to a long cold spring. I'll probably wait a couple more weeks given all I've heard.
