I just purchased a Husky 141 for $80 dollars and adjusted the carb and it just didn't sound right. Found another post about the pencil sized eraser outlet for the exhaust so I drilled that out and on the lower left and right corners punched eight small holes to allow the saw to breath. I can put my hand in front of the holes and there is definately exhaust comming out of the holes.

The biggest surprise was that I had to turn the H side jet almost 1/4 turn to get it to four stroke. There is more power for sure now. Now that I think about it, the saw was having a little trouble comming down off full throttle it would die. I adjusted the idle screw but I probably should have adjusted the L speed jet a little richer instead of changing the idle screw. I will fix that later today.

I think you over-compensated with 1/4 turn on the H.
You should have realized a cooler running saw with half that adjustment. More exhaust flow means it can expell more raw fuel to cool the saw. Any gain is a gain, don't out-smart yourself now...

Scottr,

yes there was a very tighly woven screen tack welded inside I didn't notice a tube didn't really care. I drilled out the hole large enough to reach in there with tweezers and pull out the screen. I wouldn't worry about sparks...if you pull the muffler off you can see how difficult it would be for a spark to bounce around all the turns and out the hole due to the internal baffles. I took a pointed scribe and just tapped holes in the lower left and right corners, about 8 in each corner on the front. I didn't split my muffler due to it not being pressed together it seems one side was peened (bent) around the other making gutting the muffler impossible

I've gutted mufflers assembled in the manner you describe, its not easy ,but I know it is possible.

to be honest I wear ear protection so I didn't notice any difference but both of my other saw are bigger and louder by design :blob5: :)

When I say tapped holes in the lower left and right corners I was referring to the front of the muffler.

Sounds like you did a good job.
If anyone else has a cat cvntr 141 you can just drill out the dead center front area behind the triangular plate. This creates a straight shot through the open center of the cat cnvtr system and bypasses all the internal crap.
I had a picture of that in the other 141 tread from a day or two ago.

What I would really suggest is to get a stock non cat open can muffler and open the factory slot some more. There is also a picture of that in the other thread. This will help acceleration and give a tad more power while running much cooler than the modded cat muffler. I modded both designs and the cat cnvtr muffler still runs way to hot even with the front mods. JMO.

I know its just a 141, but it sure helped it out.

I forgot...if you go to the open can/black muffler you need to get the rear heat shield and install that also.

Max,

Thanks for the tip, if I need more power I will just pick up my 357xp or if I feel like picking up an old friend I will use my Mac 4900 (see 4900 rebuild thread).

I just wanted to have a small saw that I could put on the front of my ATV that I could tune to last more than 2 years. Also if the saw walks off then I'm only out $80 see(Husky 141 $80 thread).

To be honest I didn't think the Mac 4900 rebuild was going to work, it was my first rebuild and it came out great. I don't know why I doubted I could do I used to be a mechanic. It did get me a nice little used saw though.

Hi! I have a Husky 41 (I understand its pretty much the same saw) and it would be nice to get it to breath a little better. Anyone know if the mufflers are the same? Also, the little eraser-sized hole in the picture..... is that the exhaust outlet? I can't quite figure out what I'm looking at. Thanks!

The picture I posted does indeed show the exhaust hole on a 141 silver
cat cnvtr muffler. Not one of Husky's/Poulans better ideas or design.
I put the pencil eraser there for a size comparison.

Hey ive got a 41 husky that i want to up the power on... but i havent ever modified a saw befor.. only cars...n theres a big difference...any tips on a good first mod? dont quite get the moffler idea yet..so some help her would be great.

The Husky 41 I had did not have a muffler like the one in the photo, the exhaust port (slit in the muffler that was opened out to form a diverter) that came out the side and angled forward, I just put a wide flat screw driver in the slot and twisted it to open it up some on the one I had.

Husqvarna 455 Rancher muffler mod ideas needed.

Hi guys,
I need some ideas on how to modify my muffler. Its a new saw but up at 7500 feet I know it could use a little help. Anyone doing or done a muffler mod? Anyone selling a better muffler? Thanks.

I just took a small punch and put a couple of holes in each lower corner of the muffler and drilled out the outlet port larger and removed the very restrictive screen covering the exhaust outlet port.
