Hi guys, How much damage can you do to chainsaw on a single occasion?
Can you believe it? I let frind of mine use my 272XP to take down tree that was in hes yard. He complained that saw is not performing right to hes needs so I let him use my big baby for one day and look what I got back. I guess he was finishing the cut comming out of the wood without letting the throtle go.
It was complete overhaul with 185 PSI compression cranking 15,000 RPM.
I checked all the bearings and they are still fine and smooth. What was the cause of this damage? Did any body experienced something like this before?
Thanks in advance for explanation.

Will leave the answers to the pros.
Catastrophic mecanical failure!!!
But that is one toasted saw!!!!
A good friend would have it repaired or replaced no questions.
Lent my quad out last year, same thing. But all was looked after.
Good luck

I am wondering how you know it was turning 15,000? I believe that saw was designed to turn somewhere near half that. The 2100 is a torque monster, but not much of a spinner. Probably not your pal's fault that it detonated.

185 and particularly 15,000 have a lot to do with it. Your engine was simply stressed beyond what it could handle, and came apart... There are good reason for max rpm settings.

What's the max rpm of a factory 2100??

Looked like it was in damn near all the pics.....

I only see one pic that was taken about four feet away.

Read his post again.....

I have,

I took the liberty of making it bold, but did not other wise change it. The post heading reads 2100 and then he says 272 in the thread.

This picture looks like it says 2100 on the plate.

+2

A 2100 was my 1st new saw, sometime in the last century, first thing we did was tweak it and it was a cuttin' monster but this one as others have said was pushed way beyond what it was meant for, bummer but as Lakeside said darned lucky nobody got hurt :(

Hopefully someone out there has a parts one that u cold get on the cheap and maybe you'll be able to get a working one together!

On this occasion.....Lots!!!!

Can you believe it?

Yes.........you've posted pictures:jawdrop:

Was the 272 to small for the job in the first place?

Possibly, but I doubt it.

It was complete overhaul with 185 PSI compression cranking 15,000 RPM.

Who rebuilt the saw and who set it to max out at 15,000 rpm, approx 5000 rpm above design limits.

Someone didn't read the engine spec's.
Sue the service guy..............

Thanks in advance for explanation.

I believe and suggest that the person who set the saw up is the cause of the blown engine more than operator error!!!

PS agree with Lakeside.....

That is one toasted saw....

A good friend would fix it..

That is why I hate lending tools.

Usually if you want to borrow a tool you end up borrowing me as well!

I Would Of Freaked!!!!!!

WOW looks like maybe a hair line crack prestarted prior to him using it .Curious if you gave him fuel or did he mix himself, more gas than oil.Seems like extreme heat saw overheated maybe mixture.

Straight up over rev

You went too far on the top RPM without lightening the piston. You must always remember that the saw can overshoot the top observed no load RPM and you are most likely correct that he left the cut with the throttle pinned which allowed the crank to spin past 15K and the rod just hit it's yield point on the transition at TDC.

Just out of curiosity what did you modify to get the saw up to 15K?

When running high RPMs attention to detail in balance and over building of crank components is essential for reliablity.
