I recently acquired a 242 in good shape except for a scored jug and piston. I have ordered a standard rebuild kit, including jug, piston, ring, wrist pin, clip etc. What kind of checks should I do on the bottom end that will let me know if the crank bearings are ok? I am fairly mechanically adept, but don't have much experience working on saws.

Also - I understand this is one of the fastest revving stock saws built. Where should I set my speed when she's put back together?

And finally, anybody know the differences between a plain jane 242, and a 242XP?

Thanks guys, I learn new things on this site everyday.

I have a 242 XP in excellent shape. Very good saw, I think.

The manual says its idling speed should be set at 2700 RPM, clutch engagement speed at 3900 RPM and max. speed 15500 RPM.
I have not measured those values on my saw, as its runs fine how it is.

As for an answer to your other questions, there are other members (Mange ?) who can answer those much better.

There are also places on the internet where you can download the trouble shooting manual. PM me if you need it.

Roland.
