I burned mine up down in Miss after hurricane Ivan and found a 262 piston/cylinder kit from Manufacturers Supply that bolted up perfectly. I did have to trim the mix screw stops so I could richen it up some with the 262 jug on it. I bought mine new from a farm store many years ago with a 24" bar on it. I would say that big of a bar and a dull chain is a bit much for the saw. I put a 20" bar on mine and it works great. My friends 51 with an 18" bar is still a bit quicker in wood. I guess some of that may be due to my carburetor. If i see a 262 xp carb on ebay I am going to buy it just for fun. I think you will like your saw. I am happy with mine. I am just an occasional and social saw user however:)

The 261's are great 60cc class saws... I'm sure it will last you a long time. Do yourself a favor and use a good high octane gas and good quality 2 stroke oil in all of your saws will help make them last a long time. enjoy your 261.

261 power ratings

I have found power ratings for the 261 ranging from 2.9 kW to 4.2 bhp (3.1 kW) when I looked into it.
I thought there should be no good reason for various ratings, as the saws were made for a very short period of time.
However, looking into IPL's there were in fact two versions;
-one IPL from 1998 says "261 EPA - USA ONLY" and one from 1999 that just say "261 EPA".
The only difference I found was that the "USA ONLY" version had Walbro HDA-144A carb, and the other one Walbro HDA-144. The engine and muffler part numbers were the same.

Is it possible that this difference alone can account for .2 kW difference in power output?
Do the 144A have smaller venturi than the 144? If that is the case I tend to believe in the power difference.

That should be Walbro HDA-120 (or HDA-87 on the oldest ones), but you probably know that....

My guess is that the HDA-144 on the 261 don't do justice to the 262xp jug, but I don't really know.

I will let you know if I can find a used carb for a good price :). Of course it wont be very scientific.
