I have a 1987 Husky 266xp chainsaw. It quit on me last week and wouldn't start again. I verified that it was getting gas and fire so I took the head off and found that the piston and cylinder were scored and the "ring" was in pretty bad shape.

I've seen that I can get the parts online for this saw and want to fix it myself. My local dealer said that it isn't worth putting any money into unless I do it myself... The saw to replace this one would cost me $600.

The saw works like a dream and is a hand-me down from dad to brother to me. I'd like to keep it rather than replace... if it makes any sense.

I need to know what the steps are to "rebuilding one of these and what other parts should be replaces while I'm in there. I'd also like to find out about some good sites for parts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You will need a cylinder kit and intake and cylinder gaskets. The only special tool you really need is a very long 3/16 alen wrench to get the head bolts out with, other than that its pretty straight foward. Be careful not to break the rings when installing the piston. I have seen the cylinder kits in Baileys (a site sponser) for dirt cheap.

Thanks Romeo. Any suggestions on where to buy the kit"

I've read on this forum that the 266XP is different than an "SE" ... Is this true? Anything that I should look out for when buying the kit.

Any leads on web suppliers?

click on the Bailey's banner at the top of the page in the advertisement section. They have excellent customer service and know saws. Tell them what you need - they'll fix you up. Also, buy a ring compressor kit from them - only $5 and it will make your job much easier!

I already have the head off.

Can't remember if I used metric or sea.. but I got it off without any difficulties.

I called bailys and spoke withthem (they were very helpfull) The cylinder kit that I need is $300. There is no aftermarket kit for the 266xp. They suggested that I try to hone the scoring out of my cylinder wall and try either a new cylinder or just rings.

How much of the cylinder wall can I hone out before I need a larger cylinder? also... how smooth does the cylinder need to be? Likely a stupid question but I want to get the saw running on the cheap. I'm a homeowner and need to use it only from time to time. It doesn't even need to be full power... It was given to me and has some sentimental value..but not $300 worth.

Thanks much.

266 xp

I would try to see if the cylinder cleans up before i spent the 300.00. look on ebay and purchase a piston with ring there if thats all you need. if you dont see a 266 piston that looks like yours try searching for a 670 jonsered piston and ring, there is one listed most of the time and it is the same thing. around 30.00. a cylinder gasket can be found there also for about 5.00. I would also buy a pair of crank seals while youve got it apart and replace them also. unless you run straight gas in your saw and scored the piston you must have a air leak. crank seals are very easy to change on this saw and they are on ebay for 5.00 each. the seal is in the oil pump on the clutch side. remove it tap it out with a socket and tap the new one back in. there is a plastic piece under the flywheel that is held in place with three socket head cap screws. unbolt it lift it out with a straight screwdriver and tap it out and replace it. chances are you can have her running good again for around 50.00 or so. youve got a good saw so fix her back up and good luck!
