This Husky 41 is driving me nuts. It starts fine and runs great at wide open throttle but the idle is real erratic. (ie rough, erratic, dies after a couple minutes)

I've adjusted the idle jet at least 20 times and it's set as good as it gets. How can I get it better??

Other than idle screw setting, what factors have the most direct effect on idle performance?

Carb overhaul kit needed?? Timing??? Compression????

Unfortunately dave I have not worked on this particluar model. Does it have a low speed screw? if it does that WILL affect the idle. Set the high and low at 3/4 turn out from all the way in. If you still can not get it to where it can be fine tuned, I would say it has an air leak somewhere, probably at the crank seal or at the carb. You can try a rebuild but I think it would be a waste of time. Get the saw to where it runs and spray WD-40 at the crankshaft seal (by the clutch) and if the saw runs different you have an air leak. You can try by the carb, too. Let me know how it goes

ps. Also try turning the saw sideways and upside down while idling, this can also detect a leak.

I think Huskyman is well on the right track. But dirt in the carb,
and cracks in the fuel line are two of the first things I would
check. I have had trouble out of this model before in the air
leak area as well. Fuel tank venting too.

I think he is still looking for the right carb kit. Maybe even looking for the carb itself. Dave, the carb is under that mittful of impacted sawdust.
