Does anyone know where the Husky 460 cylinders are being made now? The OEM cylinders are full of pits and devoid of the Mahle logo. Looks worse than the stuff coming from mainland China. Just curious, although we have very few professional operators running this model, I can feel the returns already.

Is there any logo in place of the Mahle one, or is there nothing on it at all?

Nothing but numbers and letters. The top of the piston has the diameter (48.96) etched in. I have heard rumors that it is being made in Italy somewhere. We have had a couple come back from customers displeased with the appearance.
 
Check out a 359 cylinder......same garbage

North Korea perhaps

That would be a real hoot if they were North Korean, talk about questionable metallurgy!!

Have you seen any failures related to the P&C on the 359s?

Mine seems to run out really good, just wanting to know if I should be on the lookout for a problem, or in the event of a failure have a better idea of what may have gone wrong.

No problems with the 359s due to the cylinders or pistons around here yet.

Some lean piston damages due to air leaks on the intakes

the cylinders just look like heck

The pits are all quite small and I am now wondering if they are plasma sprayed rather than plated and the spray layer is too thin.......dunno
 
Chuck,

I have attached the service bulletin on the intake problem. Check your serial number to see if your saw has the updated intake or not. If it does not, check with your dealer to see if they will do it under warranty.

cylinders

Just finished a MS660 and there was some differences in the finish of the new cylinder and the older ones, new one looked like the outside had goose bumps and no Mfg markings just some numbers. Piston was different and the port timing was slightly different, the finish on the wall was good and the saw came out good. Maybe Stihl is making their own or they have changed Mfg'ers

I was wondering if they would do an update for the problem

I fix the old style with a metal clamp and non hardening sealer
 
Can you post some pics of the 460 cylinders?

This is the best I can do. The little white dots on the cylinder walls are the pits. There must be thirty of them, up to a mm in diameter. I am not sure it affects the performance at all. It is just harder for us to justify as top quality OEM.

it does not suprise me it is a shame to see what the electrolux group has done to this corperation !!! obviously some of the most deticated two cycle developers (engineers) belonged to the origional husky R / D TEAM.,in my opinion and im sure many others agree any one laying down hard earned cash for a saw branded as one of the worlds best. does not deserve inferior metallurgy. in its manufacturing processes. what a shame!!!! quality quality quality!!! #1 used to be many a manufacturers key priority this seems to be fading fast with many companys .
 
The problem for me lies in the cost of such products. Husqvarna is obviously saving money by having the cylinder manufactured by someone else besides Mahle. If it is sufficient quality for the market, then good for them. But at least have the replacement part cost reflect the quality. They are charging Mahle prices for stuff they must be buying extremely cheap.
 
I don't think it is China, either Sweden or Italy.......:biggrinbounce2:

Probably the same plant that makes the 353 and 359 ones ++++ those for cheaper saws.......;)

...but the 345 reportedly has a Mahle.....

Thanks Doug...

That post makes good sense. I've read a few posts where people have fried their 359's and maybe that's been the culprit. Will a leaking intake boot display the same symptoms (like idle speed variations when the saw is tipped sideways) like other leaks? Anyway, I ordered the parts for like $5 yesterday. Would I be better off to let the saw shop replace this part or should I try it myself? The saw runs great now but I'm extremely paranoid.
