Husky 55 piston.. Help finding one

A piston designed for a finger/open port cylinder won't work for your application. I would suggest contacting Bailey's and they can most likely help you- 1-800-322-4539. You'll have to get an identical matching piston that has the windows for a closed loop transfer cylinder.

Well, good luck finding the piston.
you should be able to get it from Husky but the problem is there were 4 different p&c setups for those saws and they didn't notate which one is the closed port.

If you want I will trade you a open port cylinder that would work with the piston you have.


The husky 254 was the same bore but a different stroke I have been trying like hell to find out if the wrist pin is the same diameter and if the top of the piston to the wrist pin is the same,


If anyone can take readings on a 254 it would be a huge help.

Forget finding the 45mm piston at a decent price. You have to buy that from a Husqvarna parts dealer. You're probably better off changing the cylinder and piston with a 46mm set, because they make that aftermarket. 'Been down the 45mm road myself. The design must have either been troublesome, or unpopular, but the aftermarket has shunned the 45mm 55.

The 254 piston is quite a bit taller from the top of the wrist pin to the crown. The wrist pin is 12mm. The 254 is also meant for an open-port configuration and wouldn't work in the 55 without a lot of modification.

If it were me, I'd spend the money and get the OEM 55 closed port piston. You're looking at about $74 plus shipping.
 
46mm piston and cylinder was $95 delivered. Got it on Ebay from Bailey's. More displacement, more power, no more f***ing around! :chainsaw:
 
Sry about hijacking this thread but i thought it would be related..What would be the biggest size i could install on my husqvarna 51? 55mm? or 46mm? When i purchased it off of ebay the seller said he put a new piston into it. And after tuning it in it would run awesome after having it for over a year and being my main saw, it's not runnig to well anymore. Just doesnt have the topend power like it used to, to pull the 20" bar .325 semi chisel chain. Would like to just go all out and purchase the biggest size jug, piston kit i can and also open the exhaust up on her. Decided not going to just purchase another saw and leave this 1 sit, but would like to get my hands on a makita 6401...tks yall for making this a addicting hobby.. yup all your fault
 
I could be wrong but I believe the open-port 46mm cylinder was the biggest available for the 55 and will bolt on the 51. It won't make as much power as the closed-port 45mm cylinder though.

I beg to differ, and this comes from experience. I have installed a 46mm set on a formerly 45mm 55. The result was spectacular. The saw runs smoother and has more torque than it had before. I did add a muffler mod, and polished the ports a bit, but the difference is there.
 
That very well may be, I don't have much experience with the 51/55. I was using the experience (as a benchmark) of another member, Freakinstang, who has built several of those saws and ran side by side comparisons. Was your 45mm cylinder a closed loop transfer style?

the 254 was a closed port saw with a windowed piston the 257 was open port and had a solid piston that will not work with a closed port cylinder.

how much higher is the 254 piston?

the 45mm and 46mm rancher had pretty much the same power, I believe 3.4 hp but the rancher was sent out with a 3/8 chain.

Thanks yall for the information.. After i get my play time funds earned back up, ill go with the 46mm and open the muffler up. In the video the saw was screamin. Now currently my saw will reach wot quickly, but seems like its lost some considerable power when making a cut. New airfilter, fuel filter and nothings changed. So this just gives me the excuse to go ahead on this project hopefully next month sometime.

The saw was originally a closed loop, but the aftermarket 46mm set was open loop-style. I did not mean to insult anyone. The improvement may very well have been a result of the muffler mod and polish job. But as a general rule of thumb, there is no real substitute for displacement.
 
I have not found an aftermarket 45mm closed port piston for these series of saws yet. If anyone finds one, let me know...

I believe there was about 7 p/c kits over the years, (going off of memory). I have the husky part number for the 45mm closed port piston at home, but I won't be back there until the beginning of july...... Although, a piston from a Jonsered 590 will work, if they are still available.


The 254 piston won't work without a lot of modifications...Mainly as stated the wrist pin diameter is differant, and the thickness for the rod in the piston casting is smaller on the 254 piston....go figure the 254 has a weaker bottom end than the 51/55's.... I also have these measurements, but again, I am out of town until July.....I am trying to remember, but thinking the center of pin to to of piston height was something around 1/4" taller than the 51/55 piston. Enough, that if you would machine it, there woundn't be enough meat left to support the ring lands. It also has narrow skirts....Not ideal for performance applications. A better bet would be to get a 45mm open port piston and make the windows in it....


The closed port 45mm's run the best of the 45 and 46mm varieties, in both modded and stock variations from my experience. Although, the chamber is a lot better on the 44mm husky 50 closed port cylinders...basically the same cylinder as the jonsered 490 and Partner 5000.

I might have found the problem, just got back in from the shop. Taking off the muffler the bolts were a bit lose, but the nuts were siezed on the bolts. The muffler gasket didnt look lile it was the correct size. It was oblonged and didnt match up perfectly, i re adjusted it fer a better fit. Split the muffler in have and thier wasnt all that much carbon buildup. Took out the spark arrest screen, and remodified the exhaust outlet just a wee bit, no more bent corners that was holding the spark arrest screen in. Drilled out the 4 baffle holes maybe less then 1/8inch bigger drill size to start. Looking in the chamber thier was some length wise scratches on the piston. Got everything put back togher and went out to a cuttin log and re-tuned. Now it screams. No forcing the saw down, and actually got to hold it back from cutting to fast into the wood to keep the rpms all the way up. Hopefully this will last me for atleast 1-2-3 more trees untill i will be able to get a new jug/cylinder kit

I called Baileys and they gave me part# 503-16-87-71, but the picure that they had did not quite match what I had posted. Can anyone confirm the part number that I need. I would like to use my closed port cylinder as it seems to be in good condition and the piston that I bought (open port # 503-16-77-01) was only $9 off Ebay so I don't mind spending some money for the right Husqvarna piston.
