I have a 272XP about 10 years old with lots of hours on it. It is an unbelievable performer. Recently I had a problem fine tuning the high speed screw. I practically had to close it all the way for the saw to run at a high speed. So I figured it was time for a carb kit. I replaced all rubber and gaskets but not the welch plugs. After re-assembly, I still had the same problem. How important is it to remove these welch plugs and replace them? I don't think I've ever done it. Does dirt build up behind them? Is there a trick to replacing them?

its not the carb, you need to put a piston kit in the saw, lack of compression would be my call

Did you replace the needle when you worked on the saw?
If so, the welch plugs may need sealing with some nail polish.

Try your saw w/o air filter just to be sure its not blocked, mainly if you run with a flocked one.If ok,then the inlet needle tip is worn or at the wrong level adjustment.Cold be your welch plugs leaking too, seal them with nail polish as someone said.Under the plugs, there are only small holes to let the fuel out to the cyl,you rarely need to punch them out unless your saw is starving.
