Let me start out by saing that I have a POS Wild Thang...you know who makes these saws! Nevertheless, it has worked for me, but I got it free and cannot beat that! Seem to be more problematic, but if I got it free then I ain't complaining.

While at Lowes to pick up some electrical supplies, I saw a Husky Rancher or Farm Tough saw, believe it was the 455 model. It was used and obviously someone brought used it some and brought it back in. Used tag says $275. NIB ones are going for $375. Is this used one a good deal?

I am thinking its a so-so deal and don't think I can negotiate a lower price, but I may talk to store manager and say I will give ya $225 for it since it prolly not have the box and manual and all of the squirt that comes with NIB stuff. If he says no, I let him know its just gonna sit on floor until they have to mark it down to $1 to get it off their computers (I know...used to work at HD and that is what they do unless can return to factory).

I always thought a Stihl is better but obviuosly when you buy a NIB equip and take it home and use it for 15 mins it's classified as used...so I save a bundle if I got this.

What models of Stihl compare to power/similarity to the Husky Rancher? (I cannot seem to find the Husky Farm Boss, maybe they done away with these?). Maybe I should check the Stihl dealer because I need to look into a bush cutter but can wait on this as I think they were going for like $750.

Would got get this used Husky 455 (or Rancher as it is called?) for $275? No, I am not a pro, I do occassional cutting but may be buying land and would want to buy one eventually.

Thanks for the help.

I'd stay away from the 455, new or used......

A heavy and ungainly lump of plastic, with a really bad power to weight ratio.......

:biggrinbounce2:

Now now Troll you know that 455 is a milling machine.
Sap said so. :hmm3grin2orange:

The Stihl model comparable would be a MS290 (or 029) Both share a lot of similar features... I bought an 029 new... hasn't been great, hasn't been awful... just a decent workaday part-time saw. Paid $300 new, resale would likely be $200ish...

Considering that you could beat the store price down to 200-225, it might not be too bad a deal... Just be sure you also beat them out of a one-tankful (or more) guarantee. (if it's blown up or nearly so, one tankful of hard work will probably confirm it)

One in good shape that lasts awhile would be worth the gamble... one that blows up shortly after you get it home won't hardly be worth rebuilding. Part of the 'joy' of a new 2 stroke is that you get to make sure everything is tight, and only feed it good/clean mixed hi-octane fuel.

I have to admit that I would rather have 455 than a 290 - and that both will do the job, if you don't expect too much.

Hey.... i have a 455 rancher and i'm plenty happy with it. Yes, its a pound or three overweight, but so am i ! It has run flawlessly, and cut everything i've thrown at it. Would i buy another one? Probably not..... but for the right price i would. Its no pro saw..... but it is what it is !

P.S. If you buy it, go to your local dealer and get rid of that silly low-kickback chain that comes on it. You'll be happy you did!

455 Rancher

Picked up my 455 Rancher at Lowes for $170 after talking them down. Talk to the manager, good chance he may reduce it further than what it is tagged. It is a good saw for me as I am not a professional. Been very happy with it.
