So I am the proud owner of a 55 which was impacted by the muffler melting brake handle recall. I made some mods to the original bad muffler so it wouldn't melt my new OE chain brake BUT I'm curious what the p/n is for the muffler that solved the problem so I can replace it. Also, I wonder if there are dealers still honoring this recall 22 years later.

My 257 is just above the affected serial number range and it has a welded on deflector.

This is a link to my melted chain brake and modded muffler.

Good question. Maybe find a IPL for an earlier vs later model that was impacted to see if they changed part numbers?

BTW for anyone reading this, some of the Chinese replacement brake flags for the 55 are not formed at the right angle and they end up hitting the top handlebar. Buy with caution.

I agree with OE replacement guard. I've never seen the Chinese ones in the flesh, but I studied every picture from every angle on eBay and decided against it.

Well, I didn't have much luck there as it seems the earliest IPL I can find shows an alternate muffler with the side exhaust deflector, which mine has. Trouble was/is that even with the deflector, the handle gets really hot due to the deflection direction. As you go through the IPL years, things don't get much better; in fact, they get worse, showing no deflector at all. Oh well, I'm happy with my mod, tho it's not perfect.

I just looked at your other thread. Your mod looks good.

If you wanted more flow you could braze in a couple of round tubes or put an additional deflector like your current one.

For reference the Chinese muffler I bought for my uncles project saw had the deflector right by the brake flag so I needed to reshape the deflector. The outlet hole was smaller that stock too.
