filter efficiency

Eons ago I was involved with some rudimentary filter testing. We actually purchased SAE "fine" standardized dirt for the tests. I have a feeling that sawdust would have larger particles than this dirt. Mike Jones, perhaps Donaldson (filter mfg.) can answer some of your questions.

You shouldn't have opened your big mouth, John. If Dennis had an actual life, this would mean nothing, but since he doesn't we'll now be subjected to a barrage of even more senseless replies from him. Also understand that since Dennis is a moderator, he can delete any posts at will. When he deletes your posts, your post count will decrement accordingly. It's a fecal thing.

Glad to see this post. Walt has some of the same oppinions as I when it comes to air injection. Mainly that it doesnt filter any better because of the fact it only removes large particles and drives the small ones into the filter with speed.

hahaha...what number is that for me?

Air Injection....I don't believe it drives the smaller particles into the filter harder or faster...The air is directed into the filter box, not directly at the filter itself, leaving out the larger particles, in turn...keeping the filter cleaner longer.

At the rate you two are going, pretty soon you'll be changing your names to John Paul Sanborn and Treeclimber 165. Then I'll really have respect for you.

hahaha

Why dig up these ancient posts? You all must be snowed in and bored. I remember a big fight on the other forum over bar oil,
it went on for a long while, bringing terms like tackifier, laminate
flow, etc. to the forums. It made the boys break out their old
science books and thesauruses.

I disagree, Fish. It seems of late that many topics here have been, well, boring. I'm not speaking for myself here, because as you well know, I'm not as far into this stuff as most on this board. I've talked or communicated with more than a few people from AS over the last few months and this seems to be a common theme. There are many old threads that are fun to revisit, if not for the information, but to look back on how we were thinking way back when and how much things have changed. For example, here's a link your first post on AS back in early 2001. In that post we can see a lucid, serious, homosapien teetotaler who actually has something valid to contribute.

All my best,

I try to be polite before I infect a public forum with my brand
of thinking, it puts my victims, err.. fellowposters, at ease.
At least I do not have a cartoon with real nice boobs on all
of my posts, so I do not expect a whole lot of flack from you.
If I could get my hands on an avaataaar like that, I would never
leave the house.

leaving out the larger particles, in turn...keeping the filter cleaner longer.
Dennis, Thats the problem and the reason its nothing but a marketing gimmic. Large particles dont clog filters. Its the fine ones that do that. My back ground is auto filtration and when we build a filter we determin the smallest particles that must be filtered not the largest ones. Large particles simply hit the filter and stay on the oputside. As soon as vaccum is taken of the filter most of them fall off, and whats left cant penatrate the media enough to cloge the pores of the filter and hamper flow.

multivee filter

I would suspect the multivee filter has the advantage of more surface area over the others. The small husky(335) tells you to replace the airfilter once a month anyway because after sucking up lots of dust it will not clean easily or completely but the added surface area is a good thing whether you have one or two piston rings. :D

More surface area for an air filter has obvious advantages, but
the original post was about the number of rings.

Yeah, but air filters are more interesting than rings now. We should have one of the big boys talk about actually putting used, worn rings in the second groove to lower the friction. I guess that's a racer's trick that I probably shouldn't be talking about here.

I now knotch the head of some pistons for that added surface area and also add an additional ring, so as to reduce blow by.
John
