That's okay for the newer saws, but you need to do more research on the older ones. I asked the question of Husqvarna UK and this was their reply:

Dear Sir,

The first digit of the serial number represents the
year of production, the next two represent the week of that year.
Some saws span a decade and you would need to ascertain the age, eg the
281, ser 7400389 could be either 1987 or 1997 (week 40).

In instances like this you have to track through IPL's and look for modifications, like when they changed to the plastic chain brake lever etc... to be able to determine the correct decade. What a system! One more digit and we wouldn't have this problem.

They did not make a 281 in 1997.

The 281xp was available here in Norway as late as 2002,
and I think it is still a current model in parts of the world.
I don't know where and when those were (or maybe still are) made though......

By the way, I have seen exemples that they wrote the year with all digits (like 1998) on the number plate.

This is one of the tricky ones...

That smells like 1994, week 4, to me, but it could also be 1984.
If it is a 670 Champ, there is no doubt that it is 1994.

I think it was established in another tread some time ago that E-lux used 94...... by 1994 on some saws, but I have not seen it on a Jonsered.

ok, its a 94 then cause the thing is a champ model, and it resembles the later models more in the muffler style as well. Thanks for the help on that. these serial #s are confusing.
