I need to find out just whats supposed to be in a 394xp chain brake handle. I looked at the husq website (listed in the sticky with all the links) and I could not find an IPL on their site, only owners manuals.

I have put back together a 394xp, but its handle was disassembled before I got it. I used some parts off another saw, but its handle was in even fewer pieces. I have everything in place and it looks like it should work fine, but still no (snap) to setting the band onto the clutch. Down inside the mount there is a part that looks like a sliding barrell. From marks on that barrrell I am thinking there should be a spring that goes around it to force the mechanism to close. Anybody ever taken one apart, and I am correct or does it work under a different force?

I'll try and take a pic to show what I am lookin at.

This has been a fun project. The saw was used on pine and gummed up pretty bad, enough so that the guy sold it off rather than clean it up. I cleaned it up, replaced a few parts from another saw, modded the muffler, and now she runs and cuts awesome. The last part to get back to working shape is the chain brake.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have yet to figure out Husqvarna chainbrakes and their respective covers. I own two of their 65's, and neither uses the same assembly. In fact, they don't even use the same style brake band! I know the 65 has at least 3 different styles of chainbrake assemblies, maybe more. Before I knew better, I went to the local parts house and bought two bands for my saws. When I got home, I realized neither fit either of my saws, and I eventually had to order them.

Here is a link for you

Scroll down and pick the correct year and model for your 394, and you can pull up a schematic. I pulled up the one for '96-01, and it looks to be identical to my '97 65. I can tell you this, its a pain in the butt to reassemble (especially the first time). Email me if you have any problems, and I'll help you the best I can.

Yep, a spring goes in there. No part numbes listed on that 1st site. Both saw shops in a 20 mile drive are now closed in my area. HAve to stop into town at a shop and see if they can help me out. At least now I know what I should be looking for.

Thanks for the info. Couldnt get that second link to work....

They are there, 5 or 6 different ones, here is one.

Enter just the numbers in the search window, not the letters......

John, I've got a used one in good condition, along with a few other chainbrake parts you're welcome to for a few dollars and postage. Let me know.

Hopefully this post isn't in violation of the trading post. If it is, sorry.

These were off a working 394XP that I toasted the handle on after my spark arrestor screen placement screw came out, blowing hot air on the handle. My local dealer had a part of a toasted saw that was cheaper than me buying the other parts to fix it; long story, other problems that were solved by a new drum & clutch.
