carb is tillotson hs 224a. not worries about top cover as it is already cut up to fit the K&N stack filter. thanks!

If you go ahead with it, please post back to update the thread with a result. Alot of threads get started with a question, responses come but arent certain and then it is left unanswered.....we need closeure

btw I wouldnt recommend running a filter outside/through the top cover, they are not designed for that kind of exposeure.....JMO

i will report back when it arrives. i'm hoping to find a decent 272 cover i can somehow bastardize into working. i may have to dust off my molding skills and fab up a new top cover...hehe

why would you have to mod a 272 top cover? I thought they bolted straight onto a 266????

pretty sure a 272 cover bolt pattern doesnt match a 266 100%, would have to drill a new hole to be completly attached. finding a 272 cover is another story...

Those filters wont fit under the 266 cover. The 272 cover is about 1/2-3/4" taller in the back to accommodate the larger filters. I would personally stick with your current K&N filter setup and just custom make (or possibly buy through K&N) a pre-filter to collect the large chunks.

On a side note, I've had both HD and regular 272 filters and I personally liked the regular filter, not only did they stay cleaner but those saws seemed to have better throttle response and power. They were a really great tuned inlet track.

I am not a fan of K&N. A friend is a filter engineer and has tested a fair few filters and done a heap of research. K&N flow air well but filter like crap. The filters tested were motor vehicle of different make and models

True. We stopped using them on our race cars about 6 years ago. They didn't filter as well as a plain paper filter and we could just use a larger filter to get the same flow and pitch them at the end of the day.

K&N were contracted by a F1 team to build some filters for their race engines (now we are talking big, big dollars and very high tech) they would have been given all the tech info and specs. Both engines running the K&N filters blew up with catastrophic engine failure due to filtration in their first race. Now if thats all they can do for a big $$$ top tear build, how much care do they put into everyday applications. It would have been a huge leg up for K&N to get into F1. They blew that....literally

I like your idea of having some kind of pre-filter like my tractor air filter.... I will have to look into something like that. I should be able to make some out of some cheap foam or at minimum the wife's pantyhose.... :chainsaw:

Old thread, but. Has anyone seen those old K&N type filter kits that Baileys used to have for the 266-272 back then? With a heavy duty 268, 272 top cover they did fit a 266. I have a friend looking for one and I thought It sounded interesting enough to add it to a 268 build I have coming up.

oops, the 268 cover won’t fit the 266 so that’s out for my friend.

but, any source for those old K&n filters?

thanks
