Husqvarna 288XP thoughts

Back in around 1980 I spent $1,100 for a new Husqvarna 2100 and a new Husqvarna 240 with heated handles. The 240 was a little rolls Royce back then. My misses was pissed I purchased them. I lost my job building machines a year later. Grabbed my saws jumped in the truck and cut firewood and fed the family. Those Husqvarna saws were awesome, never broke down. I had other cutters on the same lot go to my buddys store to purchase the Husqvarna saws because I was an animal and taking all the wood. Secret don’t tell anyone I was running a Husqvarna 2100 with a 16” bar, one tooth larger on the drive rim. Dam right time is money. The saw sounded like a dirtbike. 99cc’s.

When I welded and fabricated my first engine hoist it picked up the whole front end on my one ton truck. Itsvthe only way I could prove it was safe.

I think thats a great deal for $300 if its a runner or only needs minor consumables to run.

So, I don't think it will take much to run, just not sure how much to get it to run well.

There’s not much to them. As far as making one run.

The mods you mentioned. You can open the muffler and flip the baffle thingy around. Mine is bone stock. I left it alone. Very powerful. More than you’ll need most of the time

Pretty simple. Good spark? Getting fuel? Good compression? Carb settings? Rebuild carb? Fuel line or impulse line? After that you’re talking seals, and after that it’s probably a rebuild

Well. The two series is just that much easier. They have the plastic blocks that bolt to the intake. I was just clearing that up. I own one. And two 272s. That’s why I love them because I suck at chainsaw repair. I can even keep them running.

Leaning toward stock.. going to have it running nice before i consider anything.. lines are good, i replaced the plug.. i can get it running, so it's just tuning it now.. i have a tack, just need to lookup rpm specs.. hopefully thats all i need.. seems to have good compression.. from what i coukd see through the spark plug hole, cylinder looked good. Fingers crossed

288 makes one of the meanest ported saws ever. I love the way they start on 1/4 throttle. It's like the saw just blew up in your hands. Good mods make these things monstrous.

Mine either. Yours probably has the KS cylinder. Do yourself a favor and get a d ring starter handle like they use on snowmobiles. Mine had one on it when I got it. I learned to pull the rope until you’re sure the piston is headed back down before you give the bad yank. They do pull over bad.

So, I broke my second pull cord lol.. any recommendations on cord? Went to lowes and there's was garbage.. Is there anything good online, or should I just go to the dealer? I'm frustrated, was able to start and tune, but it broke after I tried starting with the bar and chain installed

I'm not sure offhand the diameter of starter rope, but it should be not too thin that it tries to double up in the spool. Also have a close look at the spool to see if it is cracked. Sometimes if they are spread apart a bit the rope will bind up where it starts doubling up, making it really hard to pull.

Thanks! The rope probably is too thin.. The spool looked okay but will look at it closer. Thanks again for the advice!
