Hello fellas, I picked up a Husky 298 this weekend at a local swap meet. From what I have read it was only made for 2 years thus it is a hard to find saw for some people.

Now the saw needs some work but it runs. Since it is just an awesome saw, I was thinking of getting it restored. I was wondering how much you guys think it would cost to get restored. As taken apart, sent out to get sandblasted and powder coated, and then put back together replacing anything that needs to be replaced (minimal stuff).

I tried getting a hold of Randy but I think he is mad at me lol. :msp_scared:

Also does anyone know where to get NOS air filter or carb covers for the 298xp, it uses the same one as does the 2100cd and 2101xp. They have been discontinued and I am having a very hard time locating one.

Heres a video of it running:

Whats your plan for the 395 and the 288 on the tail gate next to that guy?

Im gonna sell the 395, and I am still deciding about the 288xp. I already have 70cc and 80cc saws. What I need is a 100cc or larger saw like a 084, 088, or 880. Unless I can get the 298xp fixed up or work a trade for all 3 saws + some $$ for a large saw. Or a very small saw such as a MS200 rear handle. Reason I am a stihl guy, I have 5 stihl dealers to 1 husky dealer in a 15 miles radius of my house. Parts are a lot easier to get. And the husky dealer does not have a reliable track record with husky saws in my family. Most of my uncle's run Huskys.

Ohh those 288's are junk. Just to help a fellow AS member out I'll pay postage and some handling for you to box it up and ship it to me. I'll give it a proper disposal......next to the rest of my Husky fleet!

They are so terrible I couldn't let him burden you with that. It's best if he just sends it to me.

Get them all running properly, take them out cutting really big stuff, and then see how bad you want to get rid of them.

The plastics can still be found, I'd suggest posting up in the "Swap Meet" thread as there are a few hoarders of (2100/ 298/ 285) parts that peruse that thread that may "hook you up".

Were you referring to Randy Evans? Yeah he's hard to get a hold of at times, he likes to take a lot of naps while his poor ol' son in law does all of the work. AS member glock37 is the person that did the powder coating for that 2100CD Randy had.

Good luck, and those are some of the best saws Husqvarna made.

But you are so busy these days you wouldn't want to have it in your way. I've got it's cousin here in the shop already and a pair would look so nice sitting there.. :cool2:

Not to busy to give a some old Huskys a new home. Besides... this one need a brother.

Didn't it have a brother at one point? A mild and wild port if I recall correctly?

The mild one was for someone else. Now I need to try to make one better than this.

Wildly ported, you mean muffler modded haha?

It'd be cool if only a muffler mod would make them that way but Husqvarna engineers decided to leave a lot of room on the table.

Boy we derailed that one quickly! I think we are all vultures around here!

Yup, that was like an Aussie dribbles derailment.

The saw should run a lot stronger than that if it has an aggressive port job is what I'm getting at...

Well, you are entitled to your own opinion.

To the OP. Sorry for the hijack.

Those air filter covers are very hard to find. They had a bad cracking issue with them, as you can see. If you really want a new one I'm sure someone on this site has one squirreled away.

The 298XP is almost the same saw as the 2100CD/2101XP. Except it didn't have the manual auxiliary oiler and I think they were all the desirable thin ring piston. Your saw is also missing one piece of plastic that goes on the right side under the cylinder cover and above the chain brake, still a very nice specimen.

All 298's I've ever seen were thick ring......No manual oiler and the plastic recoil cover & two pawl flywheel were the main differences between the 298 and 2100/2101.

Overall easy to find parts for still.:msp_thumbup:

The 3 parts lists for 298XP are:
298XP-86-4
298XP-87-1
both of these versions have 2 dog starter and the starter covers are plastic... mine broke and

298XP-87-6 ......2101 metal type cover 3 dog starter.
I see yours is like this style. What is the first 3 SN digits on your saw? 726 or higher? I converted mine to a 3 dog starter.
I am having 298XP, 2100CD, and 2101XP decals made for my saw and will have a few extras made...in case guys need them.

Well honestly at first I thought it was missing but after looking at where they are mounted I did not check next to the muffler above the chain guard. Duh should of looked there. But I am pretty sure it is missing.
