I had a guy drop off a husky 359 chainsaw. I took a look at it and found the piston and cylinder is scored very badly. Is there a good after market top end kit that is of good quality? I have seen a few on ebay but I'm not sure of the quality of these. Since it's not my saw I want to be careful of what I put on it. I know the OEM kit will be quite a bit more expensive. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks

I bought a 359 in the same condition as yours. Been looking on ebay for awhile for a used oem with no luck. I might end ep going the same route with one from baileys. I think mine toasted due to a leaking intake boot. The clamps are junk.

Thats good to know. Wouldn't want to put all new stuff on and it do the same thing to it. I'll have to make sure I clean everything real well and make sure everything is in good condition. Is the new west one made like the oem as far as metal it is made out of?

Same here!

I wonder how many of these toasted because of that useless clamp? Husqvarna should have recalled the whole lot and repaired them at their cost.
It's an obvious design fault.

Owie! That's exactly what this one looks like. Can some other clamp or zip tie type of clamp be used instead. I havent even looked at the one got that close yet. Told the guy I would check on what parts cost.

All you have to do is cut the tabs off the plastic clamp and put a metal one on, the P/N for the metal clamp is 503 56 00-03

Great, thanks for the part number and info. That's some cheap insurance that it doesn't happen again.

Well i talked to the guy about the cost of fixing it and he wants to fix it.

What is the proper break in procedure after putting a new top end on? Do I use the normal oil / gas mix? No reving the motor without a load on it?

For break-in, I use 40:1 and run as normal.

For the clamp, I use a 372xp clamp and cut the plastic tabs off. Or the new replacement metal clamp from Husky.

I also bought a good used OEM 359 P&C of ebay a couple months ago from Hank's Repair, for $75.

Well I'll tell you what the only dealer I trust told me to do and it seems to work well. Fill with gas and turn H and L out 1 turn. start and tune L and idle to where you want it and just a hair rich. Then sit it out in the open and leave it till it runs out of gas. Use good gas and mix. Refuel and retune to your likeing and it is ready to go. Now this is what I do and some will disagree.
Lots of these 359 died earily deaths because of those crappy clamps. I have one tore down too. Been down 2 years waiting to find a used oem top end. I may look at the Bailey's one too.

I've been watching ebay weekly for a used oem jug for a few months. No luck yet.

Hank's Repair had a new 357 P&C on ebay, so I emailed asking about it. He said he had lots of used stuff and happened to have a good used 359 set on the shelf. $75 shipped. Added a new ring and the saw runs great.

Are you sure the cylinder is no good? Many times they can be cleaned them up with muratic acid. Make sure you do a pressure test when you're done to make sure you have no air leaks in crankcase, or all your work will be for naught. That intake boot can leak in an area other than the plastic clamp,so pressure test the saw. Good luck.

I just tore it down a day or so ago. The piston and cylinder are severely scratched. I wouldnt even consider trying to use it the cylinder again.

I will be buying a aftermarket as a replacement. I cant wait to try and find a good used oem one. The guy uses it for a lawn care business.

I have never done a pressure test on a chainsaw. How is that done and what type of tool is needed to do it with?

It was said that Baileys has a gaurantee. Do you know what the gaurantee is? I looked on their site and didn't see it.

I found out how to do a vacuum / pressure test on youtube. Just have to find the tool to do it with now.
