well a few weeks ago i blew the piston and cylinder on my 365. it turns out that the black plastic air intake boot that directs air from the flywheel to the carb somehow got smashed up which caused the carb to intake air from right next to the cylinder. it got really hot and blew a ring which then scored the heck out of my cylinder and piston.
i took it the the local stihl dealership. i told them that i found a bunch of chunks of aluminum in the cylinder and i wanted them to take a look at it and assess the dammage.
when i returned to the stihl dealership they told me that the piston and cylinder where both shot and that it would be 600$ to have them repair it. they said that it was pretty much trash because i can buy a new one for just a couple hundred dollars more. they handed me a cardboard box full of parts that was formally my saw which i wasn't really impressed by and they sent me on my way.
as i was looking at all the parts i began thinking that it cant be that hard to change out a cylinder and piston. so i came here and began reading about the bailies big bore pistons and cylinders and thought i would giver a go. i threw it all together pretty easily. i was going to do a carb kit but when i opend it up it looked just like new so i thought i better not mess with it. just about had it all together when i whent to put the sprocket for the chain onto the clutch. i couldn't find it and noticed that the clutch was missing a few small parts like clips and bearings and the face plate was taken off. i thought "what the hell, how did i lose these" then i rememberd that nothing has left the box that the stihl dealership so i couln't have lost it. then i began to think "why was the clutch apart if they where just supose to look at the cylinder?". i whent down there and told them that they "forgot" to give me some parts back and asked them why he had the clutch apart in the first place. the guys face turned kinda red and he started swallowing lots and never really gave me a straight answer. they also couln't find the parts that where missing from my saw so i ended up having to bring the saw to them and show them what i was missing. i did end up getting new parts back for free but just to sum it up dont really want to be dealing with these guys in the future. got home and put it all togethere and everything when very well except the cylinder cover wont sit down all the way because the cylinder sits to high now?? has anyone ran into this problem or can suggest a fix for it?
anyways i got it running and thought "awsome" . i dont have a tac so i used my computer and some recording software to set the RPM. it worked pretty got i have it at about 13000 i hope thats the correct setting but it sure seems to cut like hell now. i cut up six birch trees for firewood with it. the saw never really got hot at all and it just powered through the wood like nothing. i have a husqvarna 371xp to compair it too and it definitly has more power now. when you rev it WOT you can just feel it jump. very nice feeling accelloration.
btw a big thanx to these forums. i this is the first time i have ever worked on an engine. i seriously knew nothing at all about saws beyond general maintenance. but after reading these forums i was confident that i would have no trouble at all with this prodject. thank you guys.
here are some pictures of the saw after the new cylinder and piston
notice the space between the cover and the saw
here are a couple of the new cylinder
