well a few weeks ago i blew the piston and cylinder on my 365. it turns out that the black plastic air intake boot that directs air from the flywheel to the carb somehow got smashed up which caused the carb to intake air from right next to the cylinder. it got really hot and blew a ring which then scored the heck out of my cylinder and piston.
i took it the the local stihl dealership. i told them that i found a bunch of chunks of aluminum in the cylinder and i wanted them to take a look at it and assess the dammage.
when i returned to the stihl dealership they told me that the piston and cylinder where both shot and that it would be 600$ to have them repair it. they said that it was pretty much trash because i can buy a new one for just a couple hundred dollars more. they handed me a cardboard box full of parts that was formally my saw which i wasn't really impressed by and they sent me on my way.
as i was looking at all the parts i began thinking that it cant be that hard to change out a cylinder and piston. so i came here and began reading about the bailies big bore pistons and cylinders and thought i would giver a go. i threw it all together pretty easily. i was going to do a carb kit but when i opend it up it looked just like new so i thought i better not mess with it. just about had it all together when i whent to put the sprocket for the chain onto the clutch. i couldn't find it and noticed that the clutch was missing a few small parts like clips and bearings and the face plate was taken off. i thought "what the hell, how did i lose these" then i rememberd that nothing has left the box that the stihl dealership so i couln't have lost it. then i began to think "why was the clutch apart if they where just supose to look at the cylinder?". i whent down there and told them that they "forgot" to give me some parts back and asked them why he had the clutch apart in the first place. the guys face turned kinda red and he started swallowing lots and never really gave me a straight answer. they also couln't find the parts that where missing from my saw so i ended up having to bring the saw to them and show them what i was missing. i did end up getting new parts back for free but just to sum it up dont really want to be dealing with these guys in the future. got home and put it all togethere and everything when very well except the cylinder cover wont sit down all the way because the cylinder sits to high now?? has anyone ran into this problem or can suggest a fix for it?
anyways i got it running and thought "awsome" :D . i dont have a tac so i used my computer and some recording software to set the RPM. it worked pretty got i have it at about 13000 i hope thats the correct setting but it sure seems to cut like hell now. i cut up six birch trees for firewood with it. the saw never really got hot at all and it just powered through the wood like nothing. i have a husqvarna 371xp to compair it too and it definitly has more power now. when you rev it WOT you can just feel it jump. very nice feeling accelloration.
btw a big thanx to these forums. i this is the first time i have ever worked on an engine. i seriously knew nothing at all about saws beyond general maintenance. but after reading these forums i was confident that i would have no trouble at all with this prodject. thank you guys.

here are some pictures of the saw after the new cylinder and piston

maybe you can trim or grind the top cover a little on the inside to get a better fit.
bet that puppy will rip once it is broken in,good job!

Did you try putting the cover on while the spark plug wire was connected..I may be wrong, but I think you have to put the cover on,and then hook up the plug wire.

i had another look at that cylinder cover after reading the replys and it turns out that the plate between the exhaust port and the mufler was slightly bent inward causing the cover to not sit down properly. fits nice and tight now. im sure looking forward to the next time i go for more firewood.
how many tanks do you think i should run through it before its concidered "broken in"

use the saw normally, just don't start bucking up big chunks for a couple of tanks and don't full rev it out of a cut.
I would think after 10-15 tankfulls it should be pretty well seated in,you will see a power increase during that time.

yeah thats what I was thinking, about 15 or so tanks.
Also, I have it set to 1300 RMP for breaking it in. Does that sounds good? also, what should I set it at when its fully broken in?

I think you have your chain brake handle on the wrong side of the cover.

I've been told I'm wrong, but I always break em in like I'm going to run em.
I figure after about 10 tanks it's broke in, but it may take more if you're not running it hard all day.

Roger that, I take it a bit easy for like 5 minutes or so, and then proceed to gouge the trigger.

Never suffered any ill effects YET, so until I do I will keep on keepin on.

well its good to know that you can take it that far... I'll just take er easy on this saw though. I have a 371 if I need to cut stuff in a hurry.

yep, All I do is use 40:1 mix till she is broke in and then 40:1 mix afterwards.

kurtty, which big bore kit did you get from Bailey's, the OEM Husky kit ($229.99) or the aftermarket kit ($109.99)?
