kurtty, which big bore kit did you get from Bailey's, the OEM Husky kit ($229.99) or the aftermarket kit ($109.99)?

I got the cheaper aftermarket kit. Its working great so far. Just used it again to cut down a big standing dead pine.

Hi - would be interested to know more on how you used your pc to set RPM... could be handy.

it was actually suprisingly easy. i used a long microphone cable running from my PC to outside to my mic and recorded my saw running. i then used recording software called "cubase sx 3" along with with an audio analizing plugin. it just basically tells you what note your saw is running at only instead of telling you in A B C ect. it tells you in Hz. all Hz is just "vibrations per second" multiply the Hz by 60 and all of the suden you have "vibrations per minute" aka "RPM". for instance when i strike an A on a guitar it will ring at 440hz. 440 X 60 = 26400rpm. so if i want to tune my saw to 13000rpm i would just go for 216hz because 216.6hz X 60seconds = 13000rpm
now you dont have to use a long mic cable. just bring a laptop or mp3 player with mic on it outside to make your recording. and you dont have to use profesional audio recording software either. you can just download any guitar tuning software that will give you hz and notes (most do).

i would asume that its a pretty acurate way of measuring rpm. its just hte speaker in the mic fluctuating with every fire of the piston. instead of using a laser on a tac to count the revolutions your just using a speaker in the mic to count the fires. kinda similar to how the spark plug tacs work.
also note that when your analyzing your recording to watch out for what are called "harmonics" they will be the Other spikes on the graph that are generally equal in distance from eachother as the spike you want to take your measurment from. but they are easy to avoid because they will vibrate and way to high frequencies that equate out to things like 34000rpm which is way to high. generally the first largest spike on the graph is the one you take your measurement from.
hope that helps. if you guys still find this kinda confusing maybe ill make a thread and go a bit deeper into how i tune my saw.
