So I have this little Husqvarna 61 Rancher w/ white top. I plan to put a 268 barrel & carb & muffler on it at some point. But looking it over there seems to be a few things that would wake it up stock...

1) Muffler mod...(motomedik did his majic there...so this one is modded)
2) intake manifold between carb & air cleaner..its really restricted. I will open it up with a die grinder.
3) Cover. The air box created by the cover has this little 3/8in x 5/8in inch hole right by the handle. Thats it. So I think first opening up that hole and possibly adding a couple of more at the rear part of that cover makes sence. Get some AIR into this room!
4) Remove base gasket & replace w/ tribond 1194 (Next weekend, don't have time for this weekend)
5) re-tune carb to match new flow characteristics.

Short of a port job..what do you think?

Looks to me the the intake side is its real limitation...that hole into the air box is tiny and that manifold from the air box to carb blocks 1/4 of the carb opening...can't be good!

(Think that air flow into the air box would hamper a 268 upgrade anyway..so that needs to be done)

I have the same saw and you are right about the intake elbow. I spent the better part of 2 hours working mine over. I have never checked the squish so I still have the base gasket in it, but I did go through and gasket match. I found a couple smaller than the openings they joined! I didn't port the cylinder at all.

As for the muffler, I cut those 3 louvers out and the baffle that is right behind it. I wouldn't do that again, it's too open and killed the torque plus robbed some rpms. I'm going to get another muffler and do it differently.

Other than botching the muffler, it runs a 24" bar without much trouble. Can't beat it for the money I have invested in it.

I can't give a before & after as it was dead on arival to this farm. I can say that it runs quite well and seems to have good power and revs out (by ear) close to my 365. I'll get a tach on it later.

I did the intake hogging & cover mod along with a muffler mod. Jason cut out the fins on the muffler and that baffle behind it, he put a .75 inch dia tube that goes almost to the middle of the muffler and sticks out about 2 inches. I hogged out the baffle in the middle of the muffler...stuck it all together and it seems to run well.

The adjustment screws ended up with 1.75 full turns for the low speed and 1.5 turns on the hi. They were at 1 turn apiece before I started monkeying with it. So its going to use more fuel..does that mean more power? I don't know.

Why a 268 instead of a 272? Either way, unless you want to cut a hole in the top of the 61 cover for plug clearance, you'll be needing a 268/272 top cover...it has a much larger intake, so you wouldn't have to mess with the 61 cover.

I have everything I need to put the 272 jug on my 61, and have had for a couple of months, but I can't scratch enough things off of my honey-do list to get the time to get it done!

I believe the 268 and 272 are exactly the same saw with only the bore being different. They both came with high and low top filter systems. The carb and intake are different than the 61, so you've got to swap everything at once.

Then I guess a 272 makes more sense...what about carb/intake manifold bolt pattern/ configuration vs. 268?

The 272 is different than the 268 on the intake side, same on the exhaust. Bailey's has the heavy duty air filter kit for the 272 (Item# 503 53 54 01).

Looks like I can use my existing 61 Carb/Intake arraingement with a 268 Barrel vs. 272. So 268 is where this will end up. Next .... after market vs. OEM husqvarna. Any reason not to use an Aftermarket Cylinder/Piston? I have found an OEM Cylinder & Piston locally but its twice the cost of a Aftermarket P/C from ebay. ($200 vs. aprox $100)

(And the Honey Do list will shrink this next couple of weeks so I can actually focus on this puzzle.)
