Old blue is gonna get tanked. Ordered a 25 gallon tank and assorted fittings, strainer, etc from Surplus Center this evening. My thinking is that I should be okay with that on a 22 gpm pump, Going to be a little creative on the return. I could change it around, but... might be simpler just to run a few feet of 1 1/2 hose and then hook my 1" hose to that, with the whole idea being to keep the flow as high as possible with least obstructions.

With the DR inertia out for who knows how long, Old blue was/is having minor cavitate problems, and I really don't like it being down to 1 splitter in wood season.

My return hose is a 1", but the tank has a 1 1/2 inch fitting and it's on the wrong side of the tank. So, I am going to run a piece of larger hose to get to a reasonable distance from the tank and then get my return connected to that.

It has a 5" cylinder on it, and a 22 gpm pump, 15hp kohler. self propelled.

I dont think you will gain anything by using the bigger hose and then adapting down. You could run your 22gpm thru a 3/4in hose without any problems. Like Valley said, you could of ordered the correct size weld in bung from surplus center while getting the tank. They only cost 3 or 4 bucks each. You will spend way more than that on buying the larger hose.

With a 22 gpm pump a larger capacity filter that uses 1 1/4" hose is needed. The return filter should be rated for at least 40 gpm. with a smaller filter the bypass will always be opening.

I thought about doing the weld in bung... However, when that tank gets here I am probably going to be in a hurry to get it mounted. It will be fine with a couple feet longer on the return hose. And actually get it into a slightly more tucked in than what I got now.

The biggest sin on the current tank is the 1" on the suction side with a hunk of radiator hose as a adapter. Not sure if my hunk of pipe with a bunch-a holes drilled for a inlet screen is flowing enough oil anyway. The entire machine is 3/4 hose with the exception of the 1/2 inch stuff headed down to the hydraulic motor (self propelled). We just back the speed down to 1/2 throttle when driving it around. works good.
