So yesterday we went after the big ash(?) at our property. It was just off the road and not 20 feet from our to be driveway, so it had to come down. Most of the limbs were either rotted out or just punky. So only a 1-2 cord of useful wood came out of this thing.

I used the 441 and 28" with a RSLF full skip chain. MAN does that thing cut!! Held an edge for 3 tanks on this dry old hard as a rock tree. I was very impressed with that chain.

We used a strap in an attempt to keep the tree from splitting in two as I cut it. There was a large crack down the center of the trunk that we were worried a bit about. You can see from the pics that the tree pretty much exploded apart as it rocked off the stump, but the strap held while I cut it and drove the wedges.

I spent today cutting and seperating the junk from the good wood. That lasted about 2 hours until the tractor had an encounter with something harder than rubber.

tractor

Nice job! But I gotta ask, what size tractor is that? I have a ford 1510 4wd and it is nice for the woods. And that tractor looks exactly like mine without the loader and backhoe.:hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2::laugh: ;) :D

It's a 1720. It's 4WD and has a 28hp 3 cylinder Shimaura(sp?) diesel. Gets the job done for me!:D

Yeah didn't see the last of the pics. That's a nice tractor. I got a 4020 JD(use it for farming though). Evan

thanks

Thanks, I was just wondering. My 1510 is a 30hp, I've had it do some amazing things for a 30hp. Mine is also a 3 cyl diesel. :D  :rockn:

i see you like your chains like my partner likes his women and chains, loose and dull.

Huh?:hmm3grin2orange:

Don't be confused by the chip size. The chains were very sharp. This tree has been dead for a looonnngggg time and doesn't cut anything like green ash.

Good pics Peacock and looks ta be a good drop too!
I hear ya on the 'dead & rock-hard', hard on the ol' mitts too I bet. Several years ago I helped out a mate with a couple of arbutus (madrone I believe it is called down south) that came down in his yard (both about 24" dbh), they'd been down over a year, my brand new semi-chisel took a severe beating that day, as did my hands, it was like cutting glass. :dizzy: Splitting it took almost as long, what a bear of a job, the stuff shattered apart. Its one of those woods that needs to be bucked and split green for happiness.
Nice job man!

Put a Propane kit on it!

Lil 1lb pony tank under the seat and a button on the dash.....

Just hit the button when you need a little bit more power.

It looks like one of those trees that makes your heart beat hard in your throat until it's on the ground and then your heart beats even harder, in your throat, when you think of what could have gone wrong.

Maybe your a little crazy, but I think most of us are. :)

Nice job on the tree. Too bad about the flat on the left rear of the tractor. I had to put two new rear tires on my Kubota last fall, it's a lot less fun that spending your money on new saws. :)

It's the right front.....

Yeah, it's time for a tube on that one. The tractor is actually borrowed from the in-laws, but I use it as needed.
