i just get a 066. i just ordered a bar and chain its a .404 36'' stihl bar. the chain is a full skip super classic i think. is this a good choice or should i have gone with a half skip chain or....... i love this saw it just feels powerful even when its not running. the throttle response is insane..

I'd be usung a 3/8 chain and bar for a start... not .404. 36 inch - you can run full comp RM/RSC or a smoother ride.

As for a novice? Hmmm, not really a saw for a novice, but...Be careful out there.

Same here, change your order to 3/8 full comp. Also unless your a tall man I would go with a 28" to 32" bar. Although the 66 will pull anything you throw at it.

My 066 has a 32" bar, and while I like the reach, I dislike the balance. With the 32" it is nose heavy.

I would like to try a 28" in the future and see how it balances out.

And, yes, be carefull...It is easy to get complacent and it only takes a fraction of a second to ruin your day....

I have 2 ms 660's that I run 28's on there nice with that set up..

this is not my first saw but i will have a lot of respect for this saw.. this is not going to be my every day bar, just one to have if i need it, i will most likely run a 28'' bar for that, since i am short (5' 10'') and like my saw to be somewhat balanced.
with a 28'' bar what would be the best chain for a fast cut? half skip, full skip, no skip, or do i even have to worry about the skip with this saw?

Just full comp (no skip) . Don't need skip on a 28 bar/066.

Yeah, I love my 066, hard to choose between that and my Super XL for my favorite...think the 066 would edge it out. Power is sooo cool.

What's the point of an 066 with a short bar on it? Of course, I'm used to 32" bars on my saws. Don't even own a 28. BUT, I'm kinda tall, that's what I've always run, and my saws aren't stock. I run full skip except when I'm playing around for speed, then I'll run full comp. That stuff bogs in long cuts though. In my lineup, the role my 66 plays is cutting big wood/light milling, and I run the smaller saws in smaller wood.

Cool, I figured know what I meant about the Zone. Over there I'm well, "bump_r". I can't get into the temporary one except for at home, so I'm just biding my time until the "real" one comes back up. I guess they're getting close.

Mine's a '68, as well - all stock 'cept for 38" Swampers, lock-out hubs, and a rear Detroit. Got a 24V HMMWV winch to bolt on one day, too. Your's looks to be a bit more "evolved"...
