A year ago, my boss and I were removing a big red oak. I had just topped the tree out and my boss had just begun chunking the trunk down when he cut right through a massive honey bee's nest that filled up a 1 1/2' diameter hole in the trunk. My boss is notorious for getting sidetracked before finishing a task so when I saw him coming down, I was thinking to myself, "Come on let's just finish the job already." It wasn't 'till I saw him swatting frantically that I realized what had happened. The whole thing was pretty funny. My boss ended up getting stung 4 or 5 times and one of the bees had gotten inside his helmet and stung him right on the top of the head. I ended up piecing together two broken cans of raid that were rattling around in the bucket truck and killed all the bees that were exposed, but we eventually decided to just drop what was left of the trunk and be done with it.
It was a shame to kill all of those honeybees but that tree had to come down. Another less painful, but equally annoying insect are horseflies. I hate it when those little buggers sneak up on you and chomp down just when you least expect it.
