My name is Cameron and i want to be a logger, preferably a heavy equipment operator. Im not sure if i should start out as a entry level position at a logging company, or just do the 3 year apprenticeship for heavy equipment.

Thanks for your help

Cameron

go ahead and get a job working in the brush while you figure it out- setting chokers, pulling rigging.

hammerlogging said it right. Start out on the ground and work your way up. If you have anything at all on the ball you'll get noticed and you'll move up. There's definitely a need for guys to run machinery in the woods as logging becomes more mechanized.

Logging equipment is specialized and often purpose designed. A course in operating heavy equipment might teach you a little about machinery but it probably won't teach you about terrain and how to work on steep ground safely.
