Picked up my 385XPG this weekend. Drilled two extra 10mm holes in the muffler. It's a monster. Insatiable.

Nice picture, do you always have a portrait photographer with you in the woods? ;)

How much extra grunt did you get with the extra holes in the muffler? My 372 is nearing the end of its warranty so I'm getting interested in releasing hp!

Also, don't you guys all use 16" bars over there? My chainsaw course instructer went to sweden to learn how to cut and said that everyone used short bars. Faster, lighter, better for limbing and safer. Maybe that was for pulp cutting only?
Just curious,

Ian

send that 372 down dozer dans way.
itll come back born again ,an raisin ----.
theys some say its a 10-15 percent increase . i dont buy that tho.
it ll be like gettin to know a whole new saw. juist a suggestion. good luck

IndyIan,

The most common bar-length in Sweden used by pro's is 13" or 15". But there's a wind of change blowing in from the west; I know at least one training-course which use 18". The main reason for the short bars are agility when limbing; Have you ever seen a Swedish logger with 20 odd years experience limbing a spruce with a screeming 346XP? It's like a dance; The limbs seem to hang in the air in a mist of chips and dust and then finally falling to the ground seconds after the saw severed them from the trunk... Then again, the trees are not that big in sweden...

I got my 385 with a 28" to be able to buck a 42" oak and to show off obviously... I talked directly with some pro's at the Husqvarna factory about muffler mods and by opening a european muffler, which has a baffle, you gain ca. 20%, that's ca. 7.5hk on the 385.
I think that increase is when you have the same area on the out-let as the in-let from the cylinder, I'm a bit on the chicken side to be safe, not really equalling the areas...
I got a piece of advice from Husky to use the Jungle-muffler, (5039590-03, 385 or 5037653-02 372) without baffle or spark-arrestor, it should be a better candidate for mods...

About the picture; Yes I normally travel with a photography-crew with 3 make-up artists, 4 photographers and 3 lighting technicians. But this one was taken by my brother ;) :D ...

Qatanlison,
I'm glad the holes worked, how much louder did your saw get? Did the engineers recommend the position of the holes?

I was doing some milling this weekend and the 372 was plenty loud already, probably I should get some ear plugs for under my ear muffs. I did some standing dead white pine which really comes out nice. The saw seems to enjoy it as well. :D

I'd like to watch some professionals cut sometime, heck I'd like to try it but I don't think too many pros want to have a "recreational" logger on their site :)
The 346xp with a short bar does sound like fun. I've got a 16" bar on the 372 but limbing is still pretty slow for me, I do try to hustle but I'm sure its crawling compared to a swedish pro with 346!

Tony,
I take your very happy with your 372 from Dan. I think for now I'll just do the muffler. Mostly I want to have the saw run cooler in the long milling cuts. If I get the chain right the saw does pretty good in the soft woods I mill.

IndyIan,

The position of the holes was my own idea, though I wanted the exhaust away from me, pretty much in the same direction as the standard muffler. There is a bevel where the holes are and I just thought it was a good place to drill. Also, the hole in the bevel debouch in the down left corner (viewed from the front) and I wanted to get the effect of letting the gases pass more easy through the muffler. I don't have any db-numbers of how much louder it got, but I don't feel I need any more protection than from what I get from the ones on the helmet. Also, the outlets are away from the working position and therefor I can't speak for any by-standers etc.

I'm thinking of getting a 385 to add to my small pile.

On the internet th e best price I've found for one witha 32 inch bar is $668

Has anyone found anything better?

Jungle muffler? Cool. Like the sound of it. Please tell more, Qatanlison.

Is there one for the 372XP? My Walkers is ok, but it's kind of rough looking.

Sylvatica,

About the jungle-muffler, in a reply a bit up, I gave the order-numbers for both the 385 and 372, but just for you, here it is again: 5037653-02 muffler for 372XP. Note though that I don't know about the EPA mufflers you guys have - perhaps they're already empty cans and therefore the gain would be marginal...
But if you decide to go ahead to get one, please tell me how it all worked out.

 You're right, Qatanlison. I didn't pick that up that 372# earlier. Hey, some of us need extra help more often than others! :D If it isn't ported more than a typical empty can US muffler, I wouldn't bother with it anyway. Thanks.

I recieved the saw today:D I the dealer had some good news for me and bad for news for himself. You see he quoted me a price of $685 for it.When he looked it up in the book that day he was looking at the 372XP and not the 385XP.It should have been like $760 he said.Well he had to eat it:D
