If shade is interfering with your expansion of lawn and garden, you might want to consider having some of your trees removed.

If the trees are sizeable, you might find someone who would be glad to remove the trees for the trees. Just make sure to stipulate how much cleanup is expected of them. Some sort of contract might be appropriate. A licensed bonded arborist might be needed.

Or you could do as I did, and purchase a good chain saw.
