I looked at a couple of Oaks (Southeast Wisconsin) the other day that had holes bored into them. This usually resulted in their death within a year after spotting this. The hole were clean and about 1/4" in diameter. I'm wondering if this is the start of Oakwilt. Thanks

Could it be that the holes were caused by secondary invaders that moved in after the tree already began its decline? Maybe some pics showing the entire tree and some pics showing just the foliage would help (close-up is nice). Oak wilt attacks the tree's vascular system, and more times than not, its symptoms appear in the top of the tree's canopy and on the outer most tips of branches first.

I'd echo that. See if there's any pattern to which trees they appear on and how they appear on those trees.

No part of Oak Wilt has holes involved.
Also Oak Wilt in SE Wisconsin comes on fast and symtoms first show in early summer. The leaves will begin to change color and fall, with in a few weeks the tree is completely dead. It's easy to identify by looking at the mess on the ground, leaves everywhere.
Holes could be an indication of boring insects or possibly somebody drilling holes and injecting something.

Any relation to sudden oak death? That is what we have sweeping through our tan oaks in northern california. Going through them like wildfire, we have plenty of firewood, but what I am afraid of is spreading it, does anyone know? after tree is dead and you cut up for firewod can it still spread?" Seems to only effect our tan oak.

Thanks mike I will read up on it. I just want to make sure I dont spread it like I said there is plenty down for firewod, but here in Hopland we are safe so far, and I dont want to bring it home with me. So far it only seems to affect the tan oaks.
