Hey guys, Hoping for a little help in identifying this coil.
It is on my Mcculloch SP125 with the 101 motor. I bought
the saw a few months ago and is a real strong runner.
I took the flywheel housing off and noticed this electronic
coil. I emailed the seller and asked him about it. His reply
was he can convert for 75 bucks but would not reveal any
info on the coil. The lamination is an original 101 part.
I believe this set up would be sweet on the large frame Mac's.

Just this week I was looking for a module for my recently acquired Homelite Super XL and couldn't find an inexpensive replacement for it. I went to the local small engine shop and he pulled out a box of used modules, none like mine exactly, but he gave me one that was close..I could tell it was off one with a slightly smaller flywheel. I put it on the saw and the saw did start eventually and it ran, although roughly. I'm not sure it's running roughly because of the module (which bolted right on) or the carburetor which I'm now in the process of rebuilding. I checked the reed valve and it was ok. I touched the fuel line and it crumbled apart in many pieces so I replaced it and the filter. As soon as the fuel system work is done I'll be able to tell what was causing the miss. I'm hoping that mis-matched module will work.

I also changed a module on a 610 this week with one that looked nothing like the one I took off but it bolted on and had a long enough plug wire. The thing started right off and ran perfectly!

One thing I think I've learned is that a Weed Eater module will not work on a chainsaw. If I'm not mistaken some, if not all of them turn in the opposite direction. I noticed an arrow on the module of the weedeater pointing the wrong way for a chainsaw.

Good to know, I didn't even think of opposite rotation.

Lee- did you get that one from Saw-King? If so, he has a conversion going like that similar to what McBob was doing with the
weedeater coils.

Jacob, This saw did not come from saw-king. It was another
seller on ebay. But claims to have been a faller for years.
It came from my coast.

Lee, I'll look tomorrow but that Phelon coil/module looks to me like one from a Poulan 2000/Micro, 3400 etc. But I could be wrong...

Thanks mark, Appreciate any info..

I looked in Stens book and didn't find any coils that were close.

The ignition coil that McBob uses for his conversions is out of a Ryobi weed eater and he claims it works well. He posted a video of the saw running.

Ok, well I know there's solid-state ignitions that will work in the Macs. As previously mentioned, McBob used a Ryobi weed whacker ignition.
I've heard of similar stories with other coils.

The one I was referring to was a Weed Eater Weed Eater, made by Poulan if I'm not mistaken. I've never owned anything made by Ryobi.

I'm assuming there is no mechanical connection between the module and the iron part, just induction? If that's the case you could use just about any combination that would physically fit. I'm gonna do a little more research on this subject, we may have stumbled onto a way to revitalize some of these old saws without breaking the bank.

Had a conversation with a old saw mechanic in Canada that said all the 125's were retro fitted with:

(Been awhile since I talked with him) Mcculloch 800-850 coil if I remember right.
The ignition plate-side needed drilled

Doubt this helps, but just adding to conversation.

Well Lee, I got a chance to look and my hunch was right. You have a Poulan Micro/1800/2000/2300 coil on that Mac.
The Poulan part # is 530069202 KIT-IGNITION MODULE and it cost 37.98.

Lots and lots of used ones out there as well. IMHO Phelon always has the best igns as well.

You can now tell the guy to take the $75 and shove it. LOL

Here are a couple that I found out in the shop.

Mark- good info. Based on yours and McBob's info I wonder if any solid-state "dummy" ignition that will fit on the Mac
laminates will pretty much work, I have one of those coils here to try out.

Someone took the Poulan coil off its' original laminates and put it on the McCulloch coil laminates, that's why they look different.
It's the same module. I highly trust Mark's judgment.

Gotcha. But since it's a PICS thread, I was just curious about the obvious physical difference in what was being presented as "the same". Not trying to be a wise-ass, just wondering...

The coil is the coil, the entire assembly is the assembly -- sometimes loosely referred to as the coil. That's what had me wondering.

Your an Ace Mark,
Can't thank you enough, Now, Are there
any of the listed poulans with points or are
they all electronic. This will be a sweet set
up for the 797's.
Another thing to keep in mind. McBob's setup
with the Ryobi coil is he's useing them on the
SP125 which has the 2 leg coil. I looked at several
Ryobi coils on ebay and i don't think they will fit
the 3 leg like what i have here.

I'm on a hunt for some coils. I could use about 50 of them buggers.
