Ive got an .031av ive had forever. Used to be only when ud first start it but now wont come out of it. What it does is seem to only fire every other time it pow pow pows along then when its reved up it sometimes comes out of it and smooths out. Lately its getting so it doesnt want to smooth out tho. Any ideas? I have never one do this before. This isnt the best explaination but i dont know of another way of writing it. When it comes out of it it runs excellent.

Simply on how I read your post, how you saw it "pow pow pows" and your repeated use of the phrase "come out of it" it sounds like it's running rich, and has an acceleration problem, which could be due to alot of things. The first thing I'd check is your low screw on your carb. If it's too rich, acceleration will suffer. Am I correct that once it "comes out of it" and is running a full speed, it will sustain itself? If it won't, and it wants to die out, again, that could be a rich setting on the carb, and could likely be adjusted out. If the saw is running rich overall, well then, it could be an air problem. Usually air problems mean that air is getting in or out when it isn't supposed to be, and the saw goes lean. But if your filter is excessively clogged, or the carb has issues, then it could be rich. We really need more specifics to more effectively assess this saw's problems. Does it only happen when the saw is warm, or does it always happen? How does the saw perform under a load (in the cut)? Does the saw deccelerate smoothely or does it take a while? If you take the airfilter cover off, is the filter wet, can you smell or see gas?

We'll do our best to help you out here, but we need a little more. :)

I agree it sounds like it is too rich. If it stays like that, you might end up fouling the spark plug too. Check the air filter and also the fuel filter for any kind of junk blocking them.

Another analogy

I just looked it up,an 031 has points type ignition, with a trigger unit.It could be that the trigger unit is mal-functioning,perhaps.This is speculation,on my part, but I experianced a similar phenominum with an 048.In that case the SEM module would not advance when the saw warmed up,thus the putt-putt,from retarded timing.

I would also suggest that your problem is ignition related, most I have seen have a
points and condenser, and many have access plugs on the flywheel, so you can
clean and adjust them without removing the flywheel. So I would suggest you try
cleaning and adjusting them first, and see if your performance improves. Set them
@ .016 thousands.

I think, perhaps the point of question, indeed points to the points. This is my point of view,so to speak. :)

I get the point. All pointers point at the points. Thanks guys. Ill check it out this weekend.

Where can ya get an aftermarket module and how pricey are they?

They are about $14 bucks, the tricky part is finding a place to mount it. Remove the
starter cover and look at the top of the flywheel. Does it have the 2 access plugs?
