Got a call from a local tree service. They needed a climber to do a tree, and their regular guy is unavailable. A mutual friend gave them my name. I wasn't comfortable climbing a tree without seeing it first, so he took me out there. Very nice guy - Mr. Campbell, from Campbell's Tree Service. Been in the business for 20-some years. He doesn't do much work anymore, but he still runs the business.

Anyway, he asked me if I was comfortable climbing up in a tree and I flatly said 'no.' He looked at me, and then said 'Good.' We understood each other quite well. I told him I only climbed a few times each year for the past 3 years, and that I had no formal training, but I read a few books and watched a few videos, and my moustache is embedded with a great deal of bravery and common sense.

Anyway, it's a fairly simple tree to climb and chunk out, so I agreed. He had a large trailer of 'junk' wood dropped off, which I will split and sell. Mostly tulip poplar and..... uh, something else I forgot already. Something soft anyway, but not too bad. A tiny bit of oak in there as well.

This could lead to more firewood for selling, and perhaps a bit of hardwood for my own burning, not to mention a few possible climbing jobs. Nifty!

We (I) climb for work... poles, silos, grain legs, towers, and near anything stickin' up in the air (except trees).
The day you can honestly say you're "comfortable" doin' it... is the day to quit doin' it.
Ya' need to be a little "on edge"... complacency will likely get ya' a quick trip to the ground, followed by an even quicker stop when ya' get there.

Just sayin'.

I'd like to try it. I've climbed a lot for fun, trees, rock, steel, buildings, etc, and climbed steel for pay, but never worked a tree trim or takedown. I actually think that sort of exercise would be good for my back miseries.

Always double up when you tie into a tree, especially when making a cut.

Plenty of room to drop things down. No ropes for lowering needed.

Bright sunlight, but it shows my 'stache really well.

Got the highest ones down. Easy peasy, but there was a hollow full of water.
