I've been sinking about 5K per year into my Ford f350 and this current downtime is the last straw. I need a smaller mid-sized truck for the back yards with 4x4 but I don't know if I can trust another ford. GM stopped making the midsized trucks in 09 soooooooo if I want one of those I have to do alot of searching and traveling.

The bottom line is this. I'm pretty sure my truck was a lemon's lemon. If anyone has experience with the 07 to 09 f550's lemme know please. I can't wait to say bon voyage to this pile.

I've never thought of the F550 as being a smaller mid sized truck but overall they are good trucks as far as I know. Stay away from the older F700s with the Lucas-Girling brakes though, they are an expensive nightmare.

Just out of curiosity, what repairs have you done to your F350 over the years? For 5K a year you should have a brand new truck after 3 years or so.

F to the FORDS~!

I got rid of 2 newer F350's only a couple years old. Lost my ass but was worth the pain and my Chevy's have mostly been holding up awesome compared to the Ford pos's.

There are probably as many people that hate GM as there are of people that hate Ford. I myself have had MUCH better luck with the General although I am VERY unhappy that they had to get a govt bailout. Truth be told I am unsure what I would buy right now, glad I am not in that position at this point.

What year?...What motor, gasser or diesel......I have a 97' F350 4x4 CCLB with 7.3 PSD 133,000 mi. and its a very good truck..knock on wood!

Mid size, just go with toyota, darn good trucks... my 2cents

I think midsize is like a 4500/5500 chevy or that size. I think he wants more than a pickup truck size.

I got the 2001 7.3 powerstroke dump. Let's see, off the top of my head:
Starter ( twice )
High pressure oil pump
Tranny
Oil pan ( pulled the engine for that one )
U joint
Pinion seal
All brake lines
Fuel lines
All wheel bearings and seals
Front end and bushings
And now the fuel injection module

I need something that's 4x4 so that limits my choices

staying away from an entire brand from one products failure (out of thousands upon thousands) is rediculous ,u had bad luck with THAT TRUCK im not saying BUY another ford just saying ,if a spoon head snapped off in your hand would u stay away from spoons and just use forks from then on?

silly question but think about it ,my dad was a ford man for years upon years got great deals on 4 chevys ,2 chip trucks ,one wood truck and a ton pick up ,now they have been GREAT trucks but now hes hit a bad run of luck ,engine in the MAIN chip truck has blow after only 30,000miles ,last NEW motor kept blowing head gaskets

take your time buying another truck if it feels right go with it ,oh make sure u get a truck that was made for WORK,pisses me off seeing guys with BRAND NEW SHINNY TRUCKS SCREAMIN WHO SCRATCHED MY TRUCK!! damnit you got the truck to work in not ride around town in........sorry been on my mind lately

I hear ya. I'm asking because I know nothing about the new ones. Especially the ones with the dual fuel port where you have to add that hog piss stuff. Obviously Im gonna take my chicken picking time with buying a new rig but I just need some feedback from guys who work these trucks. Not from a salesman.

I know exactly how you feel.I tried to borrow a truck to help my friend pick up a few things at RTG one time [couldn't use mine ,as it was full of logs until the next morning].
Anywho. My other friend was worried that the inside bed of his truck might get damaged.Yep,worried about marring the bed liner too. It's not like we were loading up some jungle gym from a yard sale.It was brand new stuff my friend just bought. Not likely we were going to just toss the stuff in there and let it bang around.

Ended up getting it the next night in my old beater . It was that or wait 5 more days for them to deliver it.

there are alot of tree "companies " in and around my town ,who the hell buys the PRETTIEST TRUCK they can find to load wood/blow chips onto ,wash it almost everyday,i litteraly laugh when i see them at the car wash scrubbing the hell out of a WORK truck

If its has a lot of miles on it, that sounds about right, stuff happends.

I had the tranny rebuilt in mine (my fault, burned it up) and new fuel housing, re-packed front beings, new disc's and calipers...typical for older trucks, better than paying over 60k for new one.

toyota tacoma

I currently drive a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. It's a reg cab 2.7 liter 4x4 5 speed. I used to drive fullsize chevys with 350 motors. The chevys all got
13.5 mpg tops, while the 2.7 gets me up to 23mpg tops, 18-20 towing fully loaded 6x12 landscaping trailer. After 3 years ownership and 60,000 miles it's been great. Had to replace the lame stock leaf springs though, because stock tacoma springs have negative arch to begin with. Got skyjacker 2.5" lift springs and 2" lift spacers in the front, along with bilstein shocks all the way around. So i've overcome the tacoma's weak spot, the suspension. Very go carty, very good 4wd. I only have 110k on mine, but a buddy of mine with a 3.4 tacoma just passed 300k miles. He did the timing chain once, that's it. They're hard to find these days, but i always liked the old T100 4x4s too.

Me I went back to the real fords and if I stick 5k in them they will last another 45 years :)

Do you plow with this truck? That could explain some things...but overall, none of those problems are out of the norm, although it is surprising to see it happen with such low miles.

I'm surprised that truck only has 45k in 10 years? Someone will pay big money for your truck because it has the 7.3 and low miles.

I have a 2000 F550 P.S.D. 4x4 dump and 9' plow.
Bought it with 83K on the clock, has 106K now.
I have added:

New starter
New fuel pump
New water pump, killed by fan clutch bearings going out
Used fan clutch
New engine oil cooler
New wheel bearings and u-joints up front.
Had the fuel tank fixed to better than new, $500
Glow plug relay x 2

Needs transmission seal, still shifts fine
Will need new oil pan soon
Needs driveline u-joints
Needs brake pads

But...I LOVE this truck. Hauls 2 honest cords of green wood with ease, STOPS with ease.
HUGE brakes are a big big deal.
Plows snow like a D6 Cat.
Weighs 12K pounds empty, returns as much as 14 MPG if I try for it on the back roads @ 35 MPH.

If I could afford the shiny new red F550 PSD 4x4 with dump and plow and sander I see online I would buy it in a heartbeat. $58K on sale.

Humm. That does sound like alot for no more miles than that. I have a 01 with a 7.3 auto and has 115K on it. It may blow its load tomorrow, but its never had a bolt turned on it other than maintaince.

IMO, you have a better truck now than any of the newer fords, except for maybe the new 6.7,,, don't know much about them. The 2004 to 2007 trucks with the 6.0 liter have good power, as long as there running. We spend probably 5 grand a year per truck, and have 3 of them. All the problems we've had has been in the fuel system, EGR cooler, and/or oil cooler.

That's a real nice lookin dump you got rope. What year is it? Looks really clean. I'd love to have one of those and put a Cummins in it.

Its a 79 f 350 and it was one owner until I bought it. The owner bought it new in 79 with a wrecker installed he still has the wrecker but made a twin cylinder pto dump it dumps anything. Ive hauled 3 yards of gravel several times never bogs down dumping. Get this, I have three spare rear ends and two granny 4 speeds for it lol. Im set for ten years I freshly rebuilt the 400 in it if it blows after 100k I will consider a perkins diesel that will connect to the granny. I think my stumper engine would fit lol. I intend to keep her for life! Im fixin to put it in the ac shop for a new air conditioner and I want to install air ride. It ain't super fast but then ole rope dont need to be!
