I found an old gear reduction two speed sail boat winch with a 3'' diameter drum and mounted it for tree work
on smaller trees - nothing over say ,30''dbh
The problem i'm having with it is lack of traction on the drum, rope keeps slipping.
I am using 1/2 & 5/8 yale double esterlon ropes
I sanded the drum to scuff it up -no improvement Any ideas--John [email protected]

Buy a real one! Actually, you might have to have someone hold the slack like the Hobbs, The GRCS self tails. That's why your getting the slipping.

If the winch is not self-tailing you MUST manually hold tension on the tail for the winch to grip the rope.
