Insect damaged oak, can it be saved???

I've got a white oak tree that has burrowing damage, I've seen big ground wasps and ants both around.

Is there any way to save it??? I know how to cut it down but would prefer to save it.

Here they are Jeff, thanks for having a look. This tree rings an area with shade loving plants in it, I hate to lose it.

The first couple of pic's look like a wood pecker tyring to get the borer. The exit hole looks like it might be a 'Twolined Chestnut Borer. They love white oak.

Thanks for the link Jeff. I'll get something and spray the base and trunk. This tree has never lost any foliage. BTW

ive had some luck with those microinjections for trees. if the spray doesnt work for you. Hit it with a product called dendrex or if you have a pesticide license or know someone that does try the harpoon. the microinjections have a very fast uptake.

I think the 'exit hole's ' can identify the culprit, but then there are other factor's. Like the food chain.

start by removing dead bark and rot. tap with hammer and where hollow sounds, gently debark, and take another pic.

does not look fatal.
