Has anyone installed a pony motor to run their boom without the truck motor running. I would like to do this. I have a 52 foot hi ranger. I was thinking a little diesel engine would be much more effective for my application. How big does this engine need to be? How do you attach the boom pump. How do you clutch it as to turn the pump on and off. Any info would be awesome.

There is no clutch. Fluid is a clutch.

I don't have your brand etc. but have a bucket with a pony motor.

The hydraulic experts tell me that I only have a 6 gpm pump. I find it hard to believe , but it seems to be true.

Check your existing pto pump, and match its size. Then find an engine that will run the pump at 3/4 throttle, IMO. Most engines run efficiently at a certain rpm.

A little info on running a pony motor, it MAY suck fuel from the system, or allow fuel to be sucked from itself when the truck is running. You may need a check valve to compensate for this.

My next unit will be a Welder/generator running an electric hydraulic pump. More versatility.

OK, Thanks for the info, when you say fluid is a clutch? You start your pony motor and the pto for the boom is already turning or what? Seems to me like that would make the pony motor turn over hard????????? Hard to get started???????? So your pump is mounted directly to pony motor??? What size is your pony motor? Does your pony motor have a fuel line into the trucks gas tank then or into the trucks fuel line? Your welder generator idea is awesome. What type of a electric pump would this idea require? That idea would work awesome for me too.

would be the same as a wood splitter the pump is hooked direct to the engine no clutch involved
