Okay folks,

whats the trick to installing these 12 little S.O.B.'s back between the rod big end and the crank???

This is my first saw tear down; i am an automotive gear head, and surely wasnt expecting to hear the cling cling of the rollers falling down inside the case when i wiggled the rod! Why arent those ???? things put in a cage like normal bearings! :)

Thanks
Ron

GREASE! Holds 'em in.

Thats what i was thinking.. i didnt know what the grease would do once the engine was running.. I tried thick motor oil, got half of em in, and then they started dropping..

Just plain old grease, like wheel bearing grease?

Thanks
Ron

A little bit of wheel bearing grease or even vaseline is all you need. Fun little buggers aren't they!

Alot of Homelite bearings I've seen are packed in wax. Repair manual even says you can use it. I've often wondered what would be best for that initial friction of a new rebuild.

I would stay away from wheel bearing grease because it is harder to breakdown than other oils or grease if it is cold out you can use caster 927 premix oil strait and it will hold them in place and it is almost clear so you can see what is going on when you put it together but it does not work on a warm day it just runs off

Ahhhh.. C'mon guys! Make this easy on me! I went to bed thinking i had the problem solved! There must be an accepted substance/method to do this!

I think you got the right advice unless you got chopwood, sedanman and glens at least, all on ignore. A set of tweasers helps. keep the needles dry makes them easier to handle.

Stihltech,
duh... I should have figured that even my high tech EP super-tach grease would fly off at 10K rpms... Guess i was more worried if there was a problem when it burns, or fouling the ring grooves or such..

Frank,
thanks for the tips on getting these suckers back in place.. Hopefully the post man has my new ring when he arrives.. Its due here any day..

Thanks to everyone who replied,
Ron

does anybody recommend packing the rod and crank bearings with [??] before closing up a case-?

from the thread above it sounds as though there is no reason to pack the rod or the main crank bearings, as any grease will just get thrown off when running ... at that point, may as well just strip any old burnt/dried/contaminated oil off the bearings clean with carb cleaner and then add a drop of fresh MX2T or equal ... is that right-?

bearings

A little oil for the initial startup. The mix will be there almost immediatly. Just a little so the don't turn dry on the first pull.
Even that little bit will smoke pretty good, but it is chaep insurance. The grease is ONLY to hold the rollers in place, not for lubrication.
